Decided to spend far too much time wondering why my brake lights weren't working despite putting new bulbs in only to find I was looking at the wrong lights.

I've spent a lot of time on this thread. And I've never quite known what is meant by these tags. What is a banana hammock? I can't imagine many people using the search facility to seek out bananas, hammocks or any combination of either.

So what's it all about then? Anyone know?

I used to have the air con on the old P1 serviced every year by a local specialist. When I bought the P2 it had just been serviced by Volvo including the air con and was told that due to the system being climate control and more sophisticated than just air con it did not need an annual service, only when it went wrong.

Anyway booked 'er indoors Mini Cooper in for an air con service as it is done every year and mentioned that both Volvo's perhaps could do with a service as well. The P2 was done while I waited and whilst there was nothing apparently wrong with the operation it did not seem to be that cold recently and when set on 19 degrees it has taken a long time to cool down to that temperature.

The whole system was evacuated, dried, pressure tested, new oil and gas added and tested. It now blows remarkably cold and reaches a given temperature very quickly. There was 490gms of gas recovered and 850gms added to the manufacturers spec, so whilst it appeared to be working fine, the performance was well below what it should have been. It will be done annually from now on.

Last night my aftermarket subwoofer died, and on inspection it's been repaired before, as the usually multi strand unsheathed wire that runs from the wiring connector to the cone has been soldered onto poorly and replaced in part by a thicker piece of what looks like regular household flex, and that soldering has parted company, so a quick click onto Facebook market place gave me an ad for this lovely JL audio unit for 30 quid and barely half an hour away, done, it takes up a lot less space than the one it replaced too, given that the subs are the same size, it sound excellent as well, I reckon the box that the old mutant sub was in is too big, as although it was loud at points, the frequency band where it used to actually hit was very narrow, this smaller one bumps along to almost anything regardless of the note being played, there were certain tracks on the old one where the bassline would have say 4 notes where one note would sound lovely, one would be a little too low and the other 2 would be barely audible, not so with the JL unit, although for car audio JL are a known good make, never really heard of mutant audio before.

Yesterday I fitted my splash guards that arrived on Friday, thanks to cbarrow for those, I reckon it looks much better with these on.

I also investigated the gauze filter in the tank as I still have an intermittent poor idle which is cured by stopping the engine for a few seconds, was a bit of crud in the tank and on the bottom of the pumps filter but nothing major really, emptying the tank was easy with the use of a 12v submersible pump that ingot off eBay, less than a tenner and a 30 litre per minute flow rate, it emptied the tank in seconds, I then ragged out the small amount of fuel that the pump couldn't get and used fresh rags with a smear of engine oil to give any crud something to cling to, a few bits but as I say, nothing major.

I then refilled the tank again using a funnel, sheets of kitchen roll and 2 190 micron paint filters to make sure nothing got back into the system, quite a bit of crap was caught by the time the fuel was back in, around 20l or so, and depsite the gauge reading around 3 gallons, which is pretty close, the trip has still lost its mind as it said 65 miles + 0 on the readout, adding another tenners worth, so just over 7.5 litres still says only 95 miles range, madness.

I didn't get any pictures as forgot to wear those disposable gloves so kept my phone well clear so I didn't get fuel and other related gunk all over it, this was nowhere near as bad as last time though, mainly just really fine blackish sediment and some other weird fibre stuff that looked a little bit like fluff, when I did it a few months ago there was serious gunge and all sorts, it was pretty much the same stuff only a lot less of it, this is the pic from last time, it's also had a new under the car fuel filter (looked like it had never been changed) after the first in tank filter clean and it's not missed a beat tickover wise since I did this yesterday morning so I'm calling this one a success.
