I changed the fluid on my 2005 XC70 at 162k mies as soon as I bought it and it was absolutely filthy and stinking although the box was operating ok.
I reset the parameters with Vida and it was definitely smoother and fault free at 186k when I sold it. I bought my current 2007 Xc90 at 119K and did the same to that as soon as I bought it. Again no issues. PS, I prefer Sump Dumps rather than Gibbons method BUT either is better than doing nothing.

Plenty have just changed the fluid and left it at that. The box is adaptive and will sort itself out. Obviously it's better to reset it with Vida but I wouldn't worry about the adaptation. Don't confuse the software update that Clan mentioned with a Vida adaptation. He is talking about a dealer only software update which is available at cost and cannot be performed by anyone else.

Undo the refil, Sump dump, Add funnel to refil, Discharge via cooler whilst adding via top. If I removed 2l from dump I would then have 6l ready and would add it in measuring our 4 from the oil cooler. As far as I am aware that would dump the front end of the box and pump the rear. 6 or 7 l in and 6 or 7l out with near 100% change. I never really understood why people would use 12l and still have some of the old stuff in, it never made sense... |

Is your car 5 speed gearbox with dipstick or the later 6 speed?

Ok, this is the sump dump method with a 6 speed auto and is the way that I do it HOWEVER I leave dumping it for a couple of hundred miles between dumps to give the new fluid a chance to do some work although the way it's done in the video clearly works.
The advantage of doing sump dumps is that it is a much gentler process and the new oil going in is gently cleaning the internal valves and galleries before being deained For those that can't accept mixing new oil with old try filling a glass of orange, drink half and fill back up with water and keep repeating. You will end up with a glass of water. The 6 speed has no dipstick however the level is automatically set as can be seen in the video BUT the gearbox needs to be up to correct temp for this to be done. This is the Gibbons method and although it shows a 5 speed box the only difference in the process is that new fluid is added down the dipstick tube whereas on the 6 speed it goes in via the filler plug. Get the correct fluid for your car. Both mine took JWS 3309 ONLY! Although the XC70 was featured in both vids it's the same box in respective XC90

Yes I was aware of the change hence mentioning correct fluid. This is the missing Video from my last post and is more pertinent to your car including how to determine the correct oil level. You will only get 3 ltrs at a time out by draining it as the rest is trapped in the torque convertor without the engine running.
