Well, just to let you know, we managed to find an older (60 reg) V50 with the D3 engine, and it's a really nice car. Incidentally, it has neither 136 nor 163bhp, but 148bhp and 258lb ft of torque, which will be plenty to tow our caravan.

Is that a 5 cylinder Volvo engine still?

Oh yes, and it's very noticeable from the torque, smoothness and quietness compared to our previous V50 1.6d. It makes the V50 feel like a much more sophisticated car. Very pleased with it.

A D3 specified at 148 hp, that's an odd one. Have never seen it marketed in Sweden. Is it a 2.0 or 2.4 liter 5-cylinder version?
It's true that the max torque from a D3 and a D5, at some years, is about the same. But there's quite a difference when it comes to what the curve looks like. The D3 engines tend to have a very narrow top torque summit on the graph, while the D5 will pull with good torque all the way to max power. So where the D3 dies above 2500 r/min, the D5 will still pull heavily at 4000 r/min. I've tried both, so I know the difference between a D3 with 163 hp/400 Nm vs. the D5 I have, with 230 hp/470 Nm is quite substantial. My caravan is 250 cm wide and weighs in a 1600 kg. |

That could be it. I've missed that discussion.
But since the Dx nomenclature indicates a certain power range, there are several engines that fit into the D3 slot. I see now in Volvo's documentation site that in 2012, there was a V50 D3 with the D5204T5 engine, specified at 150 hp/350 Nm on the home market. It's probably a variant of that one. The V70/XC70 from the same year used a D5204T3, delivering 163 hp/400 Nm. Unless it was an AWD car, which had the D5244T17, with 163 hp/420 Nm. My engine is called D5244T15, with a max output of 230 hp/470 Nm. But then it qualifies for the D5 moniker. |
