(These have a nominal working resistnace of 14 Ohms)
  • 15 Ohm 5 Watt
  • 12 Ohm 10 Watt
  • 10 Ohm 5 Watt

These are the closest I could get.

And the whole legality is a shady area...

If you have wash/wipe, it MUST work
If you have self leveling or adjustable level, it MUST work
Beam pattern MUST be correct and not scattered
Colour must be white or yellow/white (blue/purple/red/green will fail MOT)

I've had my HIDs in for 2 years now with no MOT issues.
Then you've been very lucky because what you have installed is illegal. Your headlamps are NOT type approved for HID use and they MUST have self levelling wash functions.

Take your car to VOSA and ask them.

That does spell it out nice and clear.
It also means that if you have a 7 seat xc90 with the winter pack you can just change the whole headlight and it will be legal as they have self leveling suspension which that document states is enough.

Mine has the factory ones (non bendy type) and so does my other car and I do prefer the colour of the light they produce.

Ooooo, bold and upper case. I must have hit a nerve .. lol

Hi-Jack this thread. Do you even know what that means? ... lol

I replied to martinrpeachey with the facts.

If you don't like what I posted don't ask questions about illegal car modifications on an open forum.

This.

OP: Aftermarket HIDS in a open headlight design like an XC90 often look **** and blind other road users.

If you are that desperate for HIDS, stop being cheap and pony up the money for a set of Genuine Volvo HID headlight units.

Just my opinion of course - feel free to quote in bold and caps, in wont make any difference

Its obvious you are choosing to ignore the fact that what your doing is illegal.
That's your choice, good luck.

I just hope your lack of respect for the law and other road users doesn't end in you dazzling someone to the point where the result is a fatal accident.

For the benefit of others not willing to break UK law and risk the lives of other road users. After market HIDs are pretty much illegal for road use. Even if your car was manufactured with HIDs, if you replace OEM HIDS with after market HIDs your headlights are no are no longer "type approved". The headlight was "type approved" using OEM bulbs and ballast, if you change them for cheap after market replacements the headlights are no longer "type approved" so your breaking the law.

Yes your local MOT guy may ignore it because its something he doesn't have to test for but the "old bill" and VOSA will be more than happy to drag your ass into court, especially if your lack of respect for the law causes an accident.

Well that was a great link with nothing conclusive?? Well done you!!

I have not ignored anything.
I am making an informed decision – something you have not.
I do agree that this area is woolly and I have no doubt should anything arise that I would be on the slippery slope, but:

• The headlamp is e-marked.
• It does have headlamp wash
• It does have levelling suspension

All items deemed necessary.
The reflector, the one used that is very similar on the XC70 reflector uses HIDs with no concern whatsoever.
The style of reflector used does not bleed light like lens types.

The attachment gives a better insight to what VOSA feel about this subject, a little different to what you imply!
So long as the light doesn’t bleed and it’s not a stupid colour, then I see no reason (right or wrong) that there will or should be an issue. You won’t have read (because you don’t), but I have also chosen a bulb that has exception tolerance to main the sweet spot.

I have seen several XC90 with aftermarket HIDs with no dazzle. If there was I would not consider this - but it doesn't.

You are wrong in your statement. You can fit other HID systems that are not OEM. If you wish to state facts, please do so and not your misinterpretation or lack of understanding.

You’re obviously a person who grabs a little bit of knowledge but doesn’t (although ‘can’t’ would be more suitable??) know what to do with it!!

So if you would now go and twitch your curtains elsewhere I’m sure we’ll all be happy. I imagine you’re very much a jobsworth person.

Today you have bold green which I hope you like !!
