Choosing my 1st Volvo!??!

Good Morning Folks - I am going to buy a Volvo to replace my ageing VW Estate and have come across this car locally for sale.

Seems like a really nice spec - any opinions on what to look for etc?

I have the D5 but in manual. Great car and the engine has plenty of power.
As far as I'm aware the gearboxes are sealed for life but some people may recommend changing the oil. I've known some to have erratic gear changes but this was on the older ones, not sure if the boxes were ever changed so make sure your happy with the gear changes.
Maybe for your first service you could take it volvo for a service and get the software updates if it hasn't been volvo for a while.
Volvo do a health check as part of a service, double check but I think you can just book in for one. Think there free but again ask on the phone. If anything is wrong it maybe covered under warranty.

Forgot to mention the auxiliary belt should have been changed at 54000 miles. Known to fail and take of the cam belt if not changed. Mine went weeks after buying mine but luckily it just snapped and fell off. Squealing under load can be the sign. Volvo changed my belt and tensioner at the same time, think they thought the tensioner had gone but they did mine for free so I can't complain.

Looks nice. Last of the D5s plus it has the later infotainment system, sat nav and a TFT display.

Check that the service history is full and good, I.e. right intervals.

I’d get the gearbox fluid changed as part of the price if at all possible.

When is the cam belt due for change on later D5s?

I went to look at the car today - difficult when i don't have previous knowledge of Volvos! It seemed in good nick - only issues that i could see was the boot cover roller was missing - and there was knock that had been covered on the front bumper and the very bottom under the main lights - this could be repaired properly - looks like someone has done it badly.

He only had the logbook - should i expect a large number or receipts etc?

It seems like quite a high spec - loads neither me or the salesman understood!

What is the large curved bump on the top of the dash on the driver's side?

Do you think this is a reasonable price for spec/mileage?

I wouldn't accept a car with a poor repair that's openly visible. That would need to be fixed before purchase.

I'd also expect to see bills from previous services etc. Perhaps one of those had some bad news on it that the dealer doesn't want you to see.

I'd be feeling a little uncomfortable by now and I'd be thinking about looking elsewhere for an example that's been better looked after, and that has more evidence of its past history.

What Car values it at £10,121, so the price is a bit on the high side as well. For the higher price I'd expect to be dealing with a Volvo specialist, which clearly this dealer isn't.

The V70 is a really good car, but perhaps not this example.

Perhaps find one being sold by a Volvo specialist. Your local non-Volvo dealer might have ended up buying that car because more knowledgeable Volvo specialists saw that it had issues and didn't want it.

Went to see a Skoda Superb estate a few weeks ago - and that had a load of bills for work carried out - cam belt and water pump replaced etc.

Will see if I can find another as they are nice cars- is there any specification that i really must look for?

Your correct in walking away , it didnt'd sound like a good car. There are loads around so good hunting.
Re auto gearboxes . Volvo state they are sealed for life like many makers . The truth is they are not and a visit to the gearbox makers web site will confirm oil change intervals . Factor in a gearbox flush or partial oil change at the very least into the prwill set you back £2.5K .The car makers want you to buy a new car hence all this sealed for life nonsense .

It depends upon what you're after, but a good spec wíll come with any SE Lux. My 2014 D4 SE Lux Geartronic has satnav, heated seats, powered driver's seat, high performance audio, bendy xenon headlights, TFT dash display, leather-faced seats, bluetooth and USB connectivity, and loads of safety features.

Also, there's plenty of choice regarding engines. It really depends how fast you want to drive.

The D3 and D4 models are also good, both with 4-cylinder and 5-cylinder engines. The 5-cylinder D3 and D4 are slightly less powerful than their newer 4-cylinder replacements but they offer a touch more refinement. The second fastest diesel V70 is the 4-cylinder D4, which has the advantage of an 8-speed autobox.
