There are specialist replacement custom dial makers who could supply a suitable replacement dial.

How about this one: https://www.lockwoodinternational.co...t-no-c121.html and if that's not what you need, there are others.

I always wondered if Ireland before 1922 was KPH or when it went it's own way, ditched the MPH and changed to KPH to align more with Europe? Afterall, around this time they did adopt WW1 style German uniforms/helmets....

Update.

Collected car today, on way home playing with on board computer and what pops up, but a MPH readout on the rev counter dial!

Quick detour to my local government run MOT station and nabbed a tester who double checked and he said yes thats acceptable!!!

So much for my local Volvo dealer who said there was no such facility on a V70 of this vintage

MOT, didn't go quite to plan. Noting the speedo was only in kph, I told him a mph readout was available using computer, then tried to demo same but "rear seats belts in use" message refused to budge, glances exchanged. I then suggested unlocking the "empty" seats and go for a drive which would allow the mph readout to display which it dually did, but he reminded me it wasn't a permanent solution which couldn't be allowed but after some polite discussion he gave me an MOT!

Glad you got the MOT. Do consider my HUD suggestion for the future. It meets all the requirements that you identified and I can see no reason why it wouldn't be acceptable.

The HUD that I have fitted is much clearer and quicker to read than the existing speedometer. On my XC70 the dial has a silver bezel and it makes it hard to read the speed on a glance. I'm slightly colour-blind, which probably doesn't help the situation.

Thanks for that, but part of regulations states it must be a permanent solution, the HUD is just plugged into OBD ie can be easily unplugged , or how is it setup, pic or link to your unit would be appreciated

Perhaps you would be best adopting the direct simple solution and changing the dial. This is quite common practice and these people supply what you need:

https://www.lockwoodinternational.co...t-no-c121.html

This dial shows both MPH and KPH but if you contact Lockwoods, they may be able to help with a KPH dial:

I'd come across those before, seems like a perfect solution, anyone swopped out a dial face, on a scale of 1 to 10, how difficult/time-consuming was it!?

I didn't realised that it had to be a permanent solution. Mine is plugged into the OBD2. This is similar to the one I purchased. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Hud-H...8/223506699585

I understand that to be the case, that the readout is always on, can't be swopped out or switched to another reading..... Anyone else clarify?
