Apologies if I have missed it somewhere - does anyone have any instructions for how to change the bushes for a 2003 1.8 GDI petrol V40?
I'm assuming it is the same issue but worsened due to the cable shifter mechanism....... |

Thanks!! And...
Great guide so many thanks a very easy and cheep job to do.
My only question is in the pics provided it shows a amount of oil around the linkage and when I replaced mine I found the same. Is this a common thing? Or have I caught a fail-ier as it has happened there seems to be quite a bit of oil on mine and it seems to originate higher than the linkage as the starter looks as if the bottom is covered. I appreciate any advice even if its to say your looking in the wrong thread and many thanks again for such a helpful forum Tom (ignore the bad spelling) |

Thanks for the guide. Just changed my front bushes but can still only select 3 and 5th.
I'm going to do the rears after lunch but time is against me to get it to a garage if this doesn't fix it. What are the odds of this solving it do you think? Last edited by doooford; Nov 27th, 2013 at 14:20. |

Changing bushes didn't give me my gears back
Ah, gutted. It hasn't made any difference. Now booked in with a Volvo dealer tomorrow. Anyone have any nice ideas of what it might be apart from the gearbox?

Fantastic difference
Just changed the bushes on the V40.
Driving had become a nightmare as at junctions, selecting first gear was a real struggle. Selecting reverse, well at least 10 attempts each time and as you lift the clutch it was a real lottery whether it went forwards or backwards. Tried last week to do the bushes but I had a bad arm and had to give up. Really did get disillusioned with the sodding car. Now, gear selecting is a pleasure - what a fantastic car ! |

Thanks
After struggling to get reverse in my S40 for the past few weeks I decided to order these parts. I didn't hold out much hope to be honest and thought there was more wrong with the car. I ordered the replacement bushes online which I received today and had them fitted within 15 minutes. All gears work perfectly now.
Thanks again, Mal

GUIDE : Changing the front gear linkage bushes
Hi..
Excellent post regarding the replacement of bushes, however, in your step 7 image a plastic cover is clearly visible which must cover all the linkages that are visible under my S40.. do you know what this part is called, I have searched numerous combinations for linkage cover and getting some weird results but nothing like what is needed.. Any help would be appreciated.. Best Regards Garry |

Bringing this one back from the dead :-)
Have a somewhat leggy (260k) v40 GDI 1.8 (2001) with a 2nd gear that doesn't like to play on changing down, up is fine. I know it's a cable box but do these have bushings that cause problems like the others? I've seen kits on eBay - is the process largely the same? Have a pit to make life easier (hopefully) Cheers!

Hmm, I noticed the author of this thread uses floor jack and jack stands without rubber pads. Are pads not necessary to lift without damaging the chassis? Most of them come without pads when buying, but I've seen people using them.

I found a kit on eBay which has the metal sleeves included - I take it this is what I need to fix mine, as when I select reverse the car goes into first, and to get the car into first every time I have to operate the gear lever as if I'm selecting reverse, ie, lift the detent collar and push the lever to the extreme left.
Here's the link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2817564675...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT |
