Default rear brake ventilated or plain ?

HI guys,

V70 D5 2012 215HP with autogearbox.

I'm having trouble with too much dust on my rear brake compared to the front (like twice as much).

I figured out that the pads are specific if you have ventilated or plain discs at the rear.

So I ordered the right pads for my setup : plain discs, i did not change the pads yet.

I browsed my VIDA, connected to my car, and in the specification, it says that my car is coming out of the factory with ventilated discs.

I had plain discs when I bought it, and that's what I have right now.

Does anyone know better about this ?

I'm gonna check the caliper setup to see if it matches with the ventilated discs requirement.

It may not be of help but I have a 2012 D5 215bhp Auto XC70 and that has ventilated discs but that might be an XC70 thing.

My understanding of rear brakes is V70 are solid disc,XC70 are vented.
Don't know if vented discs can be swapped in, but the reason for the brake dust at the rears is you (i suspect) are a light braker. The system is designed to brake the rear brakes first, then the fronts. This way the rear discs are kept shiny clean over their whole surface. From rarely having to change rear pads on previous Volvos I'm changing rears x2+ more than fronts .
Cheers Bob

I definitely get more brake dust on the rear wheels than the front, and am generally a very light braker (braking is just wasted energy...).

It's the same when I'm towing the caravan as well, when braking is also generally light as well.

The problem, in that respect, on the auto gearboxes is that they provide very little engine braking if normally driven and you have to either use the brakes or the gear selection override. If you bought the auto to avoid playing with the gear lever, you tend to just use the brakes.

They did. Today's gearboxes with lockup give much more engine braking, even if it's not full time, like a manual box.

But the rear wheels are supposed to brake more than front, so getting the rear ones more dirty is as expected.

I think we've exchanged on this aspect before. I speak as I find and my XC-70 engine braking is pitiful compared with my previous petrol engined auto. But I'm used to using the brakes now and no longer having sports car pretensions, even if it does accelerate like an electric metro train.

Yes, and mine does a significantly more powerful engine braking performance if I shift over to S mode.

Hey Bob, best answer, I'm a really light braker and using 90% of the time the non existant engine braking for fuel economy.

Problem solved, I'll clean my wheels more often.
