No - requires a software update from the dealer.

They're put there so that oncoming drivers can see you coming especially on dull days as we now have. So why would you need to turn them off? The reason you have to get a dealer to turn them off is that they are a safety feature that Volvo consider you should not be deleting. As an oncoming driver, I tend to agree with them

If you have a VIDA/DICE unit, You can turn them off using a program called Vdash.
They'll relieve you of about £15 to do the displeasure, With the even bigger inconvenience of having your laptop hooked up to your car for about 24 hours while it decodes your CEM. (Part of the unlock process)

I had to leave mine hooked up for just over 30 hours. It picks up where its left off if interrupted.

Why turn off DRL people ask, I park my car in a garaged area, I don't like illuminating my neighbours ground floor flat's bedrooms... I work shifts, and if I can make a stealthy appearance, I keep them happy. Same when it comes to approaching my house. I would rather approach in darkness as not to wake people up.
Plus I am under the mindset that if something is off, it should be OFF, not on, not half beam, OFF.

They go on when I am out though. I'm not one of the airheads that drive with the front DRL's on with nothing illuminating the arse end. I wish manufacturers would implement turning on the rear lights with their DRL's.

If you dont have vida/dice, you can get them on ebay/facebook.

All I asked was advice on HOW to turn them off not your opinion on why I shouldn't.

First thing I did to mine was turn off the daytime headlights. Used vdash as described above.
I think I’ve been around long enough now to know when to turn lights on and off myself.

I wasn't interested in your preferences but intended to draw to the attention of other owners who might consider doing this that they would be safer leaving well alone.

It has been tested and proven that DRL draw the attention of oncoming drivers to the vehicle displaying them quicker than if they are not displayed. Those fractions of a second that an inattentive oncoming driver might save in seeing you might just save your life. I just wondered what opposing reason there might be to that vital consideration which most governments including the UK view seriously and demand that such lights are fitted although using them isn't compulsory in the UK. If my comment prompts owners to consider the implications of saving tiny amounts of fuel against possibly saving a life then it's worth making the comment.

Studies in the US and Canada estimated that accident rates for cars that had DRLs fitted reduced by 5.7 – 7%. The European Commission released a consultation paper in 2010 which estimated that road fatalities could be reduced by 3 – 5% annually if DRLs were fitted to all cars. The UK government also references research which says that road accidents and fatalities could be reduced by up to 6%

DRLs use low powered bulbs which in most cases are low-energy LED-type units. LEDs use significantly less power than halogen bulbs and the impact on fuel consumption is negligible. Government stats place the increased energy usage at around 0.5% for cars that still use the older non-LED bulbs. LEDs will be a fraction of that figure.

Heh, Unfortunately us lumbered with SE trim levels have the non luxury of using our halogen headlights.

I'm savvy with my lights, If they need to be on, they will be.
If I want to be one of the facelifted XC's, Ill just stick sidelights on and use my LED foglights.

I set my chrysler up with DRL function, Full beam set at 6v. Worked well. Confusing to some, but definitely not enough to dazzle or irritate oncoming drivers.

DRL are definitely there for a good reason, so keep them on.
Especially when all others have them.

If you really have a problem waking people up when you exit/return, simply switch to parking lights for that brief moment.

Well, they're off now. I have my headlights on most of the time anyway.
But if I want something off, I don't want a system telling me that I cannot physically switch off lights. The dim dip on my 940 was removed, various of my volvos had the option to adjust DRL. If I want lights off when set to 0, I expect them to go off!
