Default The 460

Had a 460 to drive for a few days- as opposed to the 440.
We have had more than one 440.
Now I feel Brave enough to ask:
The 460-why?
Why no combined window and boot lid?
Why?

for those who prefer saloon car , a big secure boot , salesmen etc ? It also looks like a mini 850 which can't be bad :-)

  • The boot in the 460 is more usable than the boot of the 850 saloon I found
  • I think the boot also gives the 460 a lot better proportions over the 440 and has far neater lines.
  • I believe some also said that the 460 had a more composed ride which I can believe, as the 460 was skittish enough with the live rear axle (with the extra weight over it), hate to think what the 440 is like!
  • You can get a cool spoiler for it
  • Is probably a bit quieter?
But yeah it depends what people wanted really, for the same reasons you can get a Ford Focus saloon, Astra etc... If you want to transport washing machines, dogs etc... than the 440 will be a better bet. For everyday duties I'd much rather have a 460.

Can't say I've ever driven a decent 440 to compare, but I'd perhaps put part of the 460's appeal down to the bigger boot, more balanced styling (esp with a spoiler) and in my experience more poised handling.
Both softer than the 480 though due to the higher centre of gravity.

Insurance traditionally tended to be slightly lower on saloons too.

Back in my boy racer days (like I've ever grown out of it) I had a few Escort XR3is, but then bought an Orion 1.6i Ghia.
Ecactly the same underpinnings as the '3i, engine, gearbox, suspension... But I found the little extra weight over the back made it much less likely to lift-off oversteer when pushing my talent the little way it had to go.
Plus, it was four insurance groups lower than the Escorts. Old skool groups, like. Was a lot back then.
I still miss my Orion to this day
