No dipped headlights
Apologies in advance for yet another thread on this topic......
Confused novice of Sheffield I have a 52 plate (2002) v40. Read the forum religiously and self-diagnosed my lack of dipped headlight as being the failed relay(s) on the CEM. Bought a couple of relays from RS and finally plumped up enough courage to go mining in the footwell to find said item and, with the aid of my very rarely used soldering iron, effect a repair. Am I looking in the wrong place because up under the steering column is a fuseboard with a couple of PA66-GF25 plug-in relays among a couple of other items. I can't find anything resembling pictures of the CEM, as posted by others. The arrangement looks more like the pre-2000 pictures I've seen in other posts. |

I'm guessing you found the correct cem thread to find the correct relays. Your car has separate bulbs for dipped and full beam? If that is the case, you should have the CEM module in the area you're looking. You cant see the circuit board, just a box with wiring attached to it. Have you got yourself a solder sucker for removing the solder? Made the job much easier for me.

The cem itself looks like this, you can't miss it, well, you can't once you know exactly what it looks like anyway, and if it's a 52 it will be a full P2, the p1/1.5 mish mash cars were late 99 and early 2000 if I'm remembering right.

Thanks for the pic. I'm used to Scimitars that were made from whatever was found in the bottom of the parts bin :-)

Here's a link to a post I wrote about this issue and there's a pic of what you'll find when you take the CEM apart.
Yes, a solder sucker / or desoldeing braid is going to make the job A LOT easier when trying to remove the old relays. https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=272600

Now this will sound a stupid question but have you confirmed that the bulbs themselves have not failed? Many years ago on my V740 both dipped beams filed at the same time. An experienced DIY er I checked various things out using meters, test probes etc . Convinced myself it was a failed multi stork switch. £50 in circa 1991. Stripped out dashboard, instruments, steering wheel, cowlings etc, etc. Just before fitting new switch a techniphobe friend turned up and asked if the bulbs had failed . Guess what, they HAD. Both of them
