1997 Volvo V40 2.0 petrol Alarm location?

I am having no luck finding the alarm unit on my Phase 1 v40 (1997 petrol). I have checked under the battery and only found the alarm horn. Disconnected that hoping it had the battery for the alarm in it, but no luck. Can't disarm with fob. Checked bonnet switch. I want to just disconnect the alarm and either replace the battery or chuck it, but all information I can find says phase 1 it's under the battery, phase 2 under one of the fenders. Anyone with a clear idea where I find this thing please share. Thanks!

Thank you, it seems that the phase 2 has the siren under the fender.

Update: I have disconnected what I found underneath the battery, which was just a second horn, not a square "siren" module like shown in many photos. It is just a horn slightly bigger than the standard driver horn, not a serviceable box with screws So, I am left with blinking hazards for 5 minutes every time a door is opened. I realize I can modify the switches that trigger when the doors are opened, but this would be a temporary solution. As it stands, the alarm has been triggered for nearly a week now and I still can't find where the "unit" is that has the internal battery.

On another note, I found that cranking up the radio causes the hazards to start blinking again, but can't tell if this confirms a voltage issue in the alarm system or just something else.

Would really love to find the alarm or some other solution.

Is there anyone here who can tell us where that damn siren with batteries is located on 1995-1998 models?
I have looked for it throughout the engine part without results, the supposed connector is taped from the factory to the wiring harness on the battery side. I have searched several vehicles in a large scrapyard in my city and I have had no luck

According to VIDA the siren is located on the drivers side of the car LHD. It is not specific whether under the battery or under the front wing - the parts illustration is not accurate enough to determine. However, having had both a 1997 and a 2001, I was always under the impression that it was under the front wing, high up near where the wing bolts to the inner wing, behind the indicator light. Given that you have looked under the battery and in the engine bay, I would remove the wing liner and look up under there. My 1997 definitely did not have it under the battery.

I have inspected an S40 and a V40 of the first phase, and I can't find the damned siren in the area of the wings, or in the trunk or in the engine area...

Just a thought. Does your car have a siren as not all cars had them fitted. Also, I note you are in Spain, perhaps they were not fitted to the Spanish market if you have not been able to locate on other cars.

I don't know if it has a siren because the alarm doesn't work, if it has a horn under the battery. He was thinking that it is possible that they did not come with a siren to the Spanish market, but then Volvo had to adapt the ecu to the absence of a siren...
the alarm light on the speaker is always on steady, with and without contact, and only goes off momentarily when using the fobs
I'm new with this old Volvo, I don't have a user book, could you explain the different states of that alarm light?

I've checked my 2001 for the alarm light operation. When the car is unlocked, either with or without the ignition turned on, the light does not illuminate. Once the car is locked the light flashes slowly and consistently until the car is unlocked again. This is the same as my previous 1997 V40. I have photographed the page from the handbook detailing how the alarm works. It does state in the note that the light operation can vary depending on which country the car is designed for.

On a separate note: you mentioned earlier that you have found the alarm plug under the battery. If nothing is plugged into that it would suggest the car did not have the optional alarm or the siren box has been removed. Volvo fitted a standard wiring loom to all cars, so there are many times there is an unused plug in the loom depending on the car's specification.

You mention you have the alarm light on the dash that flashes constantly. I'm not sure if that would be fitted if the car did not have an alarm from new - I suspect it would not.

Given you have the flashing light and an empty alarm plug by the battery it suggests the car had the alarm fitted when new, but subsequently the siren box has been removed. I cannot be certain of this, just my thoughts trying to make sense of it all. Hope this helps.

Edit: I have just read another page of the handbook where it mentions central locking with remote control. If you have remote central locking the LED light on the dash will flash when the car is locked.

It appears you could have: central locking by key in the drivers door - No LED light.

Remote central locking by fob - flashing LED when locked.

Optional alarm - flashing LED when locked.

This obviously all depends on the original market that the car was built for.
