You could try Rollco for a new Bosch 2.2kW - they're in Basildon
Telephone number is 01268 271035, they'll also give you a local stockist name if you need one the same day - very keen on price

£85 for the correct spec genuine Bosch from these guys.......and no surcharge which is pretty amazing too.
I'm not saying this is the exact starter so people should check to be certain but you get the general idea http://www.dfjauto.com/DFJ020022/BOSCH-0001223024

Cheaper still, you can change the brushes only for about £15 so there are a few reasonably priced ways to skin this cat.

Right, well, I bet you're all on the edge of your seat wanting to know how I got on, ('Yeah, right' they all murmur).

Successfully, that's how. (Cue fanfare and jazz hands!)

As luck (well, Murphy's law), would have it, the non-starting problem occurred this morning (the car having stood for two days), so I ended up having to change the starter in the road, and not on the drive; which I can tell you went down extremely well with the estate agents holding an open day at the house next door!

Anyway, firstly I checked all the connections to the starter and all were clean and tight like the Leeds indy garage said.

So I pressed on and to cut a long story short, managed to change it. The worst bit was getting the old unit to budge off its locating pin, once the two main mounting bolts (and the electrical connections) were undone, but access was improved once I removed the air intake tube.

With the new starter fitted and connected up and with the battery reconnected, the new unit spun into life at the first turn of the key, whereupon I did a little celebratory dance, (followed by a text from a neighbour commenting on my dancing abilities!)

I've done several journeys today and it's started fine, first time, every time.

So, just a couple of things to wrap this up:
- the guy at Huddersfield Volvo Breakers said the D5 185 starter is different to the one fitted to the D5 163, so maybe this comment explains the debate above around the correct part.
- the defunct starter has significant corrosion around the end plate (could this be a factor in its failure?)
- and lastly, I'm happy to perform an autopsy on the defunct unit and post photos of particular parts, (of the starter motor), if anyone wants that.

My thanks, again, to everyone for their contributions on this thread.

David

Well done on the fix and I would certainly like to see a dismantled corroded starter so if you're up for it, dismantle away or if you have no more use for it with it, I'd have it off you whole.

My starter which tested out at 2.2kW is off my Euro3 163 so I wonder what the differences are.....
It could be just mounting points rather than power output.
