Testing AWD XC 70 non Haldex
A couple of weeks ago I replaced my rear anti roll bar, with front wheels on ground, and rears on axle stands. Then I was spinning the rear wheels since I thought that the handbrake shoes were rubbing, since I had to partially unclip some of the handbarke cabling. So far so good.
The other night I was looking through some threads, and came upon transmission wind up, which got me thinking...........had I induced this into my transmission by spinning the rear wheels whilst the fronts were on the ground?? At home, I raised the car completely off the ground, and with the auto box in Park, I expected the rear wheels to spin, as though they were "unwinding". Nothing happened. I spun the front offside wheel and watched to see if the rears turned.......nothing happened. So I spun the rear offside to see if the fronts turned......nothing again. I put the gearbox into Drive, and this time, I got wifey to turn the front nearside wheel in the same direction as I turned the front offside.......voila....rear wheels turning. We did the same with the rears, and this turned the fronts. So, I believe that I have confirmed that my AWD system is functioning correctly, but is this the way to do it, or is there an easier or better way.

No. I assumed that to get the rears to turn, then I would have to have the gearbox in Drive, and to which it did.

It would spin the front wheels if you turned the rears in neutral. When you were doing the rear brakes you could turn the rear wheels with the front on the ground because you weren't spinning them fast enough to lock up the viscous coupling (or have you got a Haldex? Did you check the pictures and compare?). If you have a Haldex, that's electronic and therefore not locked when the car is not running.....

Car is non haldex. Also, my plan was to swap all the wheels around whilst it was in the air, but when I depth checked the tyres, all were exactly the same. So I did not see the point in swapping the wheels. With all the tyre depths exactly the same, that would also confirm that my AWD system is functional, otherwise, after 12k, I would have expected the fronts to have worn more than the rears. (Tyres not been swapped for 12K whilst in my ownership)

Your car is FWD for 90% of the time unless you're only driving it on gravel and mud There will always be a bit more wear on the fronts as they're doing the work most of the time and having to steer the car which wears them faster as well. Also breaking puts most of the weight and stopping through the fronts... Maybe you're just so carefull setting off etc that you're just not stressing them so much so they're not wearing much more than the rears. Or you're giving it so much welly that it's in 4WD all the time
