What are people actually paying? Ours is £612 fully comp, 6 year NCD with youngest driver being 26 years and a £675 excess. No previous claims or points.

I don't see how it can't be considered a performance/chip etc even if it is just 'software optimisation'. I would never risk not declaring it. Bottom line is when you input the reg (in our case) it comes back to 215bhp as standard. It's 230bhp with Polestar. Not worth the risk. Just my two pennies worth....
Quite right too.

I've no skin in this game.

The difference is with the CoC, the vehicle passport. A car delivered and handed over to the owner from new with Polestar from Volvo will have this reflected on the CoC. The car with the software added post first registration is effectively modified from the CoC, unless a new CoC is issued.

Just my 2 cents why some insurance companies may charge for a 'modified' vehicle.

*CoC - certificate of conformity.

I went with Hastings this year, not recommended if you've got visible mods as you have to take pics of the outside/interior/engine bay/boot. Had to photoshop a bit of the engine bay and take strategic interior pics.😂

Initial price was £229, guy clocked the wheels so "adding that to the policy and the system might have to charge an admin fee". But the system gave me a £18.75 refund instead and no admin fee. So total price this year was £210.

I wouldn't tell them about a simple OEM remap, must have been like that when I bought it mate..

It's entirely about risk, and because they don't really know what's going-on with this software power upgrade they up the risk ... they don't know what's up, so they don't know these optioned cars aren't going to suddenly become theft targets &/or get wrapped around trees.

It was the same in Straya earlyish in the passenger-car turbo-diesel days, the insurers saw "turbo" and freaked out about how all these young people were going to go out & kill themselves etc. A Peugeot 405 SRDT with a THUNDERING 69kW was well over double the cost to insure as an 89kW SRI, all due to that irresponsible turbocharger thing. And it went on for ages like that, 'til the first one had enough stats to realise there was no extra risk and they could pwn the insurance market by pricing appropriately (and that it was the roadside assistance membership fees that they should have been doubling for Peugeots).

I wouldnt bother declaring it as it could easily have been done by the PO and you would never know if it didnt have the boot badge

Hastings waivered the cancellation fee. As they couldn’t insure me.
Volvo Car Insurance have accepted me with 2years NCD as I suffered 3 nights of vandalism on my old Land Rover Defender.

Like you Mick, I have gone with Volvo insurance again who have it in black and white that Polestar optimisation is covered as standard. I was with Volvo ins last year who then used Ageas as their provider. I have no issue with Ageas; they were very good with the one claim in 20 years that i had. As I have my wife's Citroen insured with Ageas I thought I'd try them directly to see if they do a two car discount. They wouldn't quote for the V90 with Polestar, despite it actually already being insured by them. I then put my details in online without Polestar and they came out significantly more expensive than Volvo ins, so no brainer. The promise of Volvo ins to use genuine Volvo parts and bodyshops is good too.
I note on the current insurance documents that it doesn't mention Polestar despite being mentioned in the policy quotation. Being a bit pedantic and distrusting of ins companies i did ask for a written confirmation and this was from the reply.."Thank you for your letter into our offices.
We can confirm we have noted on your policy that from inception you have a Volvo Approved Polestar Optimisation Software Upgrade.
This is an acceptable modification and will not affect any claims made on your policy."

That’s great well done you!
Insurance company’s are becoming a real pain to deal with.
Volvo seem to be reasonable.
