Driveline vibration in low gears (245 Torslanda)
Hi all,
I've owned my Torslanda for several months now and am gradually getting all the little kinks ironed out. It's a beautiful car and I'm really enjoying owning it, but still have a couple of issues to sort out. I recently had a new clutch, engine mounts, gearbox mount, rear main seal, aft driveshaft UJ, radius arm bushes and torque rod bushes fitted, which has eliminated 99% of the judder that I was getting when pulling away and the resonant oscillation I was getting at around 55mph. However I still get a slight vibration/oscillation when pulling away in first or when I change to second slightly earlier than I should. I'm thinking I should change the foremost driveshaft UJ and driveshaft centre support bearing to eliminate any other potential driveline issues. Beyond that, the only potential causes I can think of are gearbox output shaft bearing or diff pinion bearing. Does anyone have any thoughts? The diff is silent and the gearbox works smoothly and isn't losing any oil, so I'm not treating either out/in bearing as a prime suspect.

Those two components are cheap and easy to replace. Given you have done the rest, why not do them and that way you know the age/mileage on all driveline parts. However...
I replied to an earlier posting of yours with this problem. I think your issue remains the clutch from what you describe. I wonder whether it needs to bed-in? Are you also clear that the engine rear bearing is sound and the gearbox input bearing and/or seals? Also, have you checked/changed gearbox and diff oils? Keep us posted! |

As above, replacing the uj and the driveshaft support bearing is the obvious next step, and again as above theyre relatively cheap.
I had a similar issues with my 245, which I think was due at least in part to the gearbox output bearing. Swapping the gearbox solved the problem (I was swapping from 4 speed to 5 speed anyway). That gearbox had over 300k on it... how many miles is your car showing currently? Cheers |

This may be a bit of a long shot but it did happen on my 88 240:~
I had an annoying intermittent vibration/knock at times- it turned out to be loose bolts (three from memory) on the front suspension lower control arm- at the mounting point to the main car body (large bushed bracket) once tightened up it has been fine to date. Good Luck, Bob |
