London winter looks promisingly cold this year. She got through last winter no issue - problem is seller didn't respond with what 'ruddy oil they had running through her veins. Thanks again BLS07 |

Hi Dibble,
Yep - I know of Irv Gordon too. Amazing that the original camshaft, for example, is not worn outside of allowable range -- at all. Incredible really. Castrol GTX 10w30 (manual's viscosity spec) was the first choice I had/have. Just can't find that. I understand the more resistant it is to thinning, then the higher the second number (10W-40 versus 10W-30, for example). Ultimately my understanding is that is a good thing, right ?.. Because within reason, thicker oil generally seals better and maintains a better film of lubrication between moving parts. I guess cold climes such as Scotland would make 20w50 about perfect in that case? ..London winter is some-may-say 'softer' (unless coastal..anyway that's a debate for another day) ..so thinking the 10w40 Fuchs or similar be the goods! Cheers BLS07 |

It isnt just ambeint temps, its the internal oil galleries, bearing clearances, oil pump etc which also govern the viscosity. Zddp needs to be in the 800-1300 range, though classic oils ought to be 1000-1300 range. Yes, too much isnt good. Some modern oils still contain over 1200 zddp, which is generally those which are API SL rated as a mild rule of thumb. Some C spec oils contain 800 which is sufficient, A/B spec oils usually contain in the 1000-1100 region. IIRC, off the top of my head, at work... |

Cold climates need thinner oil. It isnt quite as simple as the viscosity numbers, but by and large. See here regarding hths and other technical stuff, https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=283503 I made an oil thread to try and prevent threads like this getting clogged up with waffle! 20w50 would be ratger inappropriate for an enigine built around 10w30. |
