Smile 2L mpg query.

Hi

I currently own a 1.6D SE Nav D2 and was at a dealer in edinburgh today looking at a 2l D4 R Design,i get 47 mpg with my current model and the rep assured me that the D4 would give me more or less the same mpg due to the newer more economical engine,is this just salesman talk or is he being genuine, anyone got any facts and figures for me!?

There are so many things that affect fuel consumption that it’s impossible to say but, as a guide, my wife gets 50mpg with her 2 ltr D3 automatic. Given that her car has the old 5 cylinder engine and the auto box will cost 10%, a D4 manual should easily get well into the 50’s

I've just gone from 1600cc to 2000cc. It's made no difference at all to mpg results. It's how you drive, the difference is you get a choice with a larger engine. But that's your choice.

If you hoof it around, you'll cane fuel. That's true of any engine.

Different cars but

2 yrs with a 1.6d Volvo V60 - Avg 46mpg approx
3yrs with a 2.0d Volvo XC60 - Avg 44-46mpg
18mnth with a 2.0d Skoda Superb - Avg 52mpg

The right engine with the right car will give you better mpg than a little engine with a heavy car.

I've had 1.6d V40 as courtesy cars before and I thought it actually felt okay with that combination. The 2.0d will clearly make the ride easier and calmer. The trick will be not to thrash it. If you don't then I would probably believe the dealer on this one as there is a bit of weight to a V40.

47 from a 1600 is not that good, it is capable of 70 + mpg , like wise the D4 will be capable of 70 mpg but it is the latest technology so should be about the same if not better than yours , assuming you drive in a similar manner and don't use all the available power ! oh and never go above 70 mph that's when it rapidly gets uneconomical .at the other end of the scale an average speed of 40 mph is best ..
