Question 240 verses 940

hi,

I have a volvo 240 1987 with 112000 miles bought 6 years ago for £350. Fitted a new radiator, headlight and did the cambelt. Recently the exhaust failed and since it has considerable rust/rot along the back end where the bumper trim meets the body and has started rotting at the rear of the drivers cill I thought well it owes me nothing and time for a change. So...

I bought a 95 940s lpt with 120000 with good service history. I bought it with out seeing it, my father went and had a look at it. A nice car, been kept outside, leather interior. Had a couple of problems, leaking heater matrix and radiator. Fixed the heater matrix and radiator, then if you follow the thread for 940 will not accelerate you can see the problems I had. These seem fixed though with new distrubutor cap, rotor arm, leads and plugs. It is now running like a good une. However, whilst fixing the 940 had to get the 240 back on the road and have put a new exhaust on.

Basically what do the forum think about which to keep and which to sell?

I reckon the 240 will hold together for another year or two. I like the 940 but the experince is bad but with the vechile registration duty we have to pay on Jersey and the parts stands me in at nearly £2000!

Advice and thoughts please.

Regards

Likewise, I have to say, having just gone back to driving a 240 from a 740, I prefer it.

Maybe just what I'm used to after 17 odd years with a 240, but it just seems more solid somehow.

Wink 240 versus 940

I have a K reg 940 and L reg 240 and when driving the 940 I feel that people are looking at me sympathetically because they think I'm driving it because I can't afford anything better but when driving the 240 I feel as though I am announcing myself as a free-thinker who is driving this iconic masterpiece as a matter of choice. 240s have a pedigree, 940s don't.

Although I own a 940, I used to own a 240. I would keep the 240 too loved mine when I had it, and really want to get another, but will hold out until I find a really good one, then Swedenise it like my 940 is, with the tints and so on. Went to Sweden three years on the trot a number of years ago, and loved the way the Swedes tarted theirs up. Deffinately keep the 240.

The 940 is a better car in every respect, but its not a 240!

The 240 just has something about it.

I had a 7 seater 240 some years ago and had to sell it because I needed 7 adult seats as my kids were growing out of the rear facing boot seats. I have to agree with Tim, the 940 is better but somehow it hasn't the magic of the 240.

The 940 styling follows the 740's rather crude attempt to woo the lucrative American market. The 240 is an ugly old bird but she has character and you just help loving her!

I'd love to get my old one back!

Ask yourself this..

Are you a romantic or are you a pragmatist? Are you governed by head or by heart?

For me 240 every time!

I sold my first 240 and regretted it as the guy was driving it away. I am now happy and content again with my 2nd. A 240 is for life .......

You won't get £2k back on the 940... so combine both, build a 240 turbo (with the rust fixed) then sell off surplus parts to get some of the costs back!
