Default Over 250K club?

Interesting article in one of the tabloids listing the number of models still on the road with over 250,000 miles (based on MOT history records):

Top 10 high-mileage cars on UK roads with over 250k on the clock

1. Skoda Octavia: 1,950

2. VW Passat: 1,874

3. Toyota Prius: 1,742

4. Ford Mondeo: 1,278

5. VW Golf: 1,047

6. Toyota Avensis: 1.027

7. Audi A4: 997

8. Mercedes Benz E-Class: 956

9. Ford Galaxy: 899

10. Audi A6: 637

Really surprised there's no XC90 or V70 in that - how many 2003/2004/2005 models will still be going around??

Some of those cars will be mini-cabs I guess

Cheers

I agree with the minicab/taxi suggestion which would account for the Octavia, Avensis, Mondeo, Galaxy, Passat and E-Class but the Prius is a real surprise.

It would be interesting to see numbers for different mileage categories both higher and lower.

Also from experience, P2 based Volvos can easily do many more miles but the knowledge to fix their quirks isn't as widespread amongst general garages leading to big bills for wrong guesses and owners cutting their losses.
Main dealers have the knowledge but only do "by the book" fixes with new parts so once again, the bills go through the roof.

There are a lot of prius taxi here in Southampton and I would guess that other cities push that route as well.
Mine is over 250 on a 54plate (late 2004) and i know that Ianu’s is also over 250k.

Ah taxis.... that explains it....

There’s a chap at work with a Golf with 220k that still drives ok but barely anything still works.... including door locks and parts of the dash. And it’s well rusty....

My Ford Galaxy has 215k on the clock and goes like a train; only problem is the interior is ****e; the pumpe deuse diesel I know is good for over 300k as used for taxis!
I believe the Xc90 is a keeper as the interior is higher spec and the body very solid so expecting it to last 20+ years; the engine is also known for high miles so just the gearbox and turbo to watch but then have had to replace mass flywheel and turbo on the Galaxy so expected wear and tear; if I can keep everything else together will be very pleased.

I think driving habits have changed now , where as in the old days you bought a volvo and just drove it , road were clear and it was no problem doing 300 miles day for years , it keeps going with no trouble and the years and miles go sky high .

Today you lease a car and change it every 3 years or so , mileage doesn't seem to get so high due to the huge traffic congestion problems we now get and also lease mileage limitations , also the second owners buy them who could not afford them new and hence they keep their mileage down and run them on a budget .

Very true, Clan. And if you add to your point about congestion our bad road quality leading to increased suspension wear which, although not necessarily terminal in its own right can push a budget over the edge unless you can diy, and there are many cars destined for an early and otherwise avoidable grave.
For example, if we'd had to pay garage rates to do our XC90's wishbones, lower balljoints, wheel bearings, discs, pads, steering rack, parking brake cable and oil change all at once... well, we wouldn't have an XC90 anymore. I suspect bad roads has killed many an otherwise sound car.

My previous car was a Citroen C4, I let that go at 325,000 miles.

Yup, the world has defo changed, many moons a go, I bought my dads 1976 244DL when it had 66k on the clock at 5 years old, I sold it 8 years later with 327K miles to a taxi driver in Kilmarnock, 2 years later it was still working as a taxi goodness knows how many miles it had by then.

They don't make them like they used to, but then again hardly anyone uses them like that any more.
