There's no excuse for not buying the crank holding tool, it's only c. £26 from Amazon.......£3 @ 4c workshop...lol

Ahh, the myth off pulley off/on for Doozles persists, brillant.

Why? Because they are just bolts and a nut, totally re-usable 100's of times.
I used to do that - I learnt the hard way>
I did a cam belt on a Golf TDI a few years back, I thought the same & re-used the engine mounting bolts, which are stretch bolts with a torque + angle-tighten.
A couple of days later, two of the engine mounting bolts sheared and engine was then resting on the subframe !
I'm not saying you can never re-use stretch bolts, but you're on thin ice if you re-use a critical stretch bolt & re-tighten it with the full torque + angle turn.

Default Crankshaft nut removal D5 Auto.

Of course you can go off and buy equipment to slacken the nut, but another suggestion is to take the car along to a local commercial vehicle repairer and get them to slacken the nut for you. They don't usually mess about with half inch impact wrenches, but have three quarter drive ones with more than sufficient torque. Once slackened, it can be temporarily re tightened to a less , but adequate torque for the short return journey
I have attempted to remove a Honda crankshaft nut using a CP - near enough Rolls Royce of half inch impact wrenches - the nut won that battle, so commercial vehicle repairers if is for me if mine doesn't do it.

Bolts with an angle tightening value aren't always yielding.
Part of my day job is looking after the integrity of a load of high temperature fasteners running up to 565C and up to 6" in diameter.
The really important ones are tightened using induction heating or hydraulic stretching.
Some of the less high integrity ones are snugged and then have an angle of turn applied, its far more reliable than pure torque on big fasteners that are heavily tensioned, they definitely are not yielding and can be reused as long as they have creep life left. So don't always assume that an angle of turn means the bolts are yielding.
I think most of the time single use bolts are that way because they come with blob of Loctite on that's gone after the first use.

I splashed on a solid mains rattle gun and it did it in under 2 secs

I got the volvo hold tool and a good 2nd hand torque wrench to do it proper like.

OK how to get the nut off without impact driver: (Dont use 1/2 drive tools)

Fit the crankshaft holding tool. Next hold the car on the jack and fit the 3/4 drive socket and tommy bar onto the crankshaft nut.

Drop the weight of the car onto the tommy bar using the jack, bingo nut undoes no matter how tight it is. The tommy bar will have to be in say the 5 o clock position so as the car drops onto it, it loosens the nut anti clockwise.

Don't let the ruddy car fall off the jack!

I have a Britool torque wrench that goes about 300 NM for doing it up.

[QUOTE=DieselDoNicely;1971897]OK how to get the nut off without impact driver: (Dont use 1/2 drive tools)

Hi DieselDoNicely, when you say don't use 1/2 inch tools does that mean air impact wrenches too, or just hand tools, and what is the reason for this? It's possible to buy 680Nm to 880Nm air impact wrenches in 1/2inch for a reasonable price so surely they would be up to the job or else they wouldn't sell them? I have an air compressor so I don't want to go down the electric route.
