Mpg at lower cruising speeds gets quite crazy indeed, I can see instant mpg in the 70-80 range at 40-ish mph. I think most cars get very high mpg at these speeds, small rural roads are the best for fuel consumption

The best bit is coasting downhill when you get to see instantaneous 99.9mpg! If only!......The worst is under heavy/full available acceleration in the T5 when it reads 6.9mpg

A friend who was a traffic police officer tells me that at a steady 135mph the police V70's readouts were of the order of 8mpg - not that he took much notice of anything other than the road and other traffic at that sort of speed.

In London traffic I can go as low as 18mpg

On a 1300mile runs, loaded to the roof and pretty much dragging exhaust an inch above tarmac because of it, I can do 33mpg.

Record was when I was properly overloaded: 5 person tent, mattresses, sleeping bags, table chairs, roof box, bicycle, gas bbq+ gas..

London to Bordeaux area, avoiding motorways, and that was before French dropped the speed limit to 50mph. Something around 37mpg.

It's interesting because our cars here in Canada display in l/100km, I remember coasting downhill the gas cuts off but not completely, don't remember exactly the instant value - perhaps around 0.5l/100km but I have to check again.

Speaking of 99.9, when my front O2 sensor took a break, it was showing 99.9l/100km in bumper to bumper traffic. No surprise, my gas gauge was dropping almost visibly (the O2 sensor failed because I tryed to 'clean' it with a torch, talk about urban legends)

A check engine light accompanied a plummeting fuel gauge during a day of driving before I could get home to my reader. 'Twas my front O2 sensor.
It likely shaved 6 months off the life of my cat.

These are my figures for a 2002 v70 auto 2.4 n/a 170hp version:

23.4 Filled car to brim, ran to almost low fuel warning, then used total fuel filled to calculate mpg
29 mostly a/b roads
23.9 Mostly to work and back
33 - mostly commuting and some motorway
23.95 mostly to work and back
23.58
25.92 had added fuel injector cleaner in this tank of fuel ( STP brand )
29.7 Lots of motorway miles
26.59 Roughly half tank left according to guage
31.66 Mostly motorway miles
25.99 mostly town
27.11 mostly town and a trip to London
30.17 mostly motorway miles with
24.92 mostly town
30.45 Lots of motorway miles
27.45 mixed
25.29 town

Note I calculated the MPG my using the amount of fuel I put in the tank and the odometer reading since the last fill up.

I'd say these tally exactly with mine, which I also did brim to brim and calculated. Mine is turbo'd but it doesn't seem to make much difference in economy either way over the NA if they are driven the same.

What BlueRubber does is what I do except I do my tallying at the end of each month.

I ceremoniously use the calendar date of the day I take possession of the car.

It adds a measure of excitement to my life.

The best I've reached with my old S80 facelift 2.4 and manual gearbox was around 30mpg
