XC90 parking brake.
I know this subject has been posted before, but need a bit of guidance on the subject.
I have the back discs off and when I get the new shoes, will be changing the whole lot as the internal drum is rusted. Although the cable doesnt seem under tension I had in mind to loosen the cable off. Got the panel off, located adjuster, removed the clip, the barrel wont turn in any direct, am I right in thinking it should thread forward over the clip groove? I'm not using a tool on it just fingers. Would be grateful of a brief rundown of the procedure from this point to the adjustment phase, thanks in advance, Pete. |

Morning Pete, with the Parking brake off and the clip removed from the adjuster next to the passenger seat, you need to wind the adjuster so that it goes over and covers the clip groove and you will then feel things slacken off. You may well need to use tools initially.
Here are a couple of threads and I would certainly buy the adjuster kit that goes in the shoe mechanism in place of the solid bar. This makes a huge difference. Good luck. https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showt...=parking+brake https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showt...=parking+brake ADJUSTER you need 2 of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOLVO-XC9...IAAOSwypdZpxdZ

Hi, I must agree that adding the adjuster makes a dramatic difference to the footbreak. I had observations indicating a weak hanbreak on my last three mots, but no longer. Fitting these adjusters made a fantastic improvement
For a cost of about £12 for genuine Volvo is a very sound investment. John l |

Thanks fellas some good info there. I remember the adjusters well, from my V70.
Thankfully live a few miles from FRF so able to get the parts at a discount thanks to the membership of this forum. |

A cautionary tale.
My 2005 Exec failed its MoT last week due to Parking Brake Efficiency (8%). Nothing new there, but I do have the adjusters fitted, use it regularly and bed in the shoes periodically to try to keep the inside of the drums clean. However new discs (and therefore drums) were required due to internal rusting. Use it or lose it!
