D5 (2005 on) - Intermittent power loss, now limp mode

2006 V70 D5 185hp

180000 miles

I've had the car for around 9 months and every now and again if i accelerate hard power would drop off until i restarted it again

Last week it started bunny hopping down the road. This was traced to a broken resonator pipe. This was replaced with an aftermarket one

It is now in limp mode. Is still drivable but not much power

Engine service message is on. A mechanic found loads of codes (too many to list) and cleared them and it was going well until it got to about 3000rpm and the message Soot filter is full came on

I haven't been back to the mechanic as he is busy

I've seen mention of a 'regen' on here. I don't know what to do. I don't know these engines at all

There are Volvo specialists out there but i fear a huge bill. The car only cost £1800

I imagine it will be something simple but it's just a matter if finding it, isn't it?

It's got to go on a 160 miles round trip at the weekend so i'll see what happens

first thing check the oil level is not too high it should be lower than the top marks.

Engine oil?

How or why would that have this affect?

It's gone into limp mode after the resonator was replaced

Listen to this. What have you got to lose by checking anyway ?

Perhaps too much oil means oil burning ? = DPF issues/regeneration/limp mode.

Coincidental with (an aftermarket) resonator change seems questionable ?

Is it definitely 185, silver engine cover ?

its a starting point.. when you find out its over filled by failed regens of the dpf caused by the failed resonator . there is a set way of defining your problem . checking the oil level is the first and easiest step more steps are available if your interested

As Simmy says ensure the all important oil level is correct before going forward. Then carry out another diagnostics, delete all DTCs and see which, if any, come back. Work from there.

I read of one chap, with a 185bhp unit, who had an intermittent "drop in power" issue (I can't find the thread now) that resulted in the car going into limp mode. I think he resolved it by cleaning/replacing the two MAP sensors on the intercooler.

yes cleaning the sensors is further down the list. Of many things to check but the op asks for help then questions the answers

On the first half of the 160 mile trip the soot warning and loss of power came and went twice

On the reverse leg it didn't come on at all

I've now done a few shorter journeys and it hasn't come back

Did you do anything to the car or has it "healed" itself ?

It healed itself pretty much

Before the trip i was advised it might help to 'give it a run' and i read somewhere (on this forum i think) to leave it in 5th gear and not 6th

Soon after trying to go above 50mph the message came on and the power dropped but i made it onto the motorway and eventually it got to 70 where i put it on cruise

I didn't notice but at some point the message had gone and power was back. I only when accelerating from roadworks the problem came back but again sometime later it went away until i got to the journey end

On the way back on Monday i kept it in 5th but the problem stayed away. I haven't put my foot down as yet but it's driving normally at the moment
