Thanks Modelflyer.. Thought so.. I've seen some of the videos on how to strip the motor and clean it.. Is it worth asking the garage if they can do that before going down the entire 'replace actuator' route? I do have a bit of doubt that the actuator is the issue with the tailgate as I can open it by pushing the handle towards the front and then opening it...but then again what do I know. I just work in IT, lol.

They're going to call me this morning with a quote on how much they reckon it will cost.. I've looked on line and the actuators are about £160 each and seem to be an entire waste to change just because a sub component is possibly faulty.. A bit like having to bin your computer because of a faulty memory stick.

Will let you know the damage once they have called and I've had a chance to have a lie down in a darkened room..

Hi the actual motors used in the lock assembly are cheap motors similar to those used in toys or rc models . it's possible that your garage will strip and clean them but they are more likely to just want to replace the complete units as the motors are not supplied separately. A bit like having a keyboard that won't work n h lf th l tters. Good luck and enjoy your lie down before checking the bill.

Thanks Modelflyer.

Will be good to see how the XC70 compares the SAAB on the journey. One thing I do miss is the SAAB seat. That felt like it enclosed you in it. The Volvo one feels more like you're sitting 'on' it.. if that makes sense. I do suspect that the fuel economy will be a lot less.... No tearing down the Autobhan for me this time..

Luckily with the ability to properly lock the doors I will be sans stowayas lol

I know this is an old thread but I have just had a similar (same?) issue with my 2008 XC70.

For a while the tailgate handle has been inclined to not work, it felt loose but, if I pushed it back and tried locking and unlocking again, it would work. Then it just refused to work, it felt like it was locked and no amount of pushing back would help.

I found info for the previous model here but that didn't help as the trim can't be removed from inside when the tailgate is closed. I could pull the top away and look down on the lock but there was no sign of anything to unlatch it, as there was for the previous model. Here is a repost of the photos that got lost from the original message

I took it to my local mechanic and he pulled the cable off the handle and discovered that it needed to be pushed, rather than pulled, to unlatch the tailgate.

He squirted silicone lubricant around the cable and the handle, managed to get the nipple on the cable back in the slot on the handle, and it is now working again. I've left the trim off for the time being, until I see how long the fix lasts.

Here are couple of photos of the back of the handle and the small silver bit is the nipple on the end of the cable. With the trim off, I can easily push it down and unlatch the tailgate from inside.

(Dropbox link - hope it works, can't find any help on posting images)

(ditto)

If this stops working, I'll have to think about a replacement or maybe dismantling and lubricationg as per the older model thread.

Do folk never lubricate their latches these days.

I regularly give mine a spray of wd40 or duck oil.
Discovery 1 are renowned for the tailgate catch not working unless lubricated regularly, I do the volvo at the same time as the discovery, touch wood not had any problems yet.
