I don’t believe it should be tricky, quite a few videos on YT with similar repairs or people replacing the system with something more modern.

I searched for Volvo RTI screen and this nice video came up...

Visited my local indy garage today, they stated they could not turn off the theft protection but could have a go at writing in the new sat nav, said it was around £60 and he didn't sound confident it would work so......tried swapping the actual screen over tonight, a relatively straight forward exercise however it hasn't worked, the new screen remains as dark as it the old one so clearly the problem isn't the actual screen, on the plus side it did remain up and out of the dash, bit of a loss now.
I might consider dropping in a newer one or maybe a Tom Tom.

Well done for persevering, this does sound like progress even though I appreciate it probably doesn’t feel like it.

Def calling worth calling other indies to see if anyone will remove the protection but I would try a bit more work on the unit. It would seem to confirm the theft protection issue is causing the unit to shut down again, so theft protection removal would resolve the issue...if you have a working unit to use!

Is the display illuminating at all? Does it “glow” black or does it flicker at all when powered up? Are the cables all seated well? Have you access to a multimeter to see if there’s voltage for the backlight/screen?
