V70 T5 2.3L. I am repeatedly haveing trouble turning the ignition on. I insert the key and it just will not turn. may be 20/40 attempts before magically it works.
I have tried WD40 and the steering lock is not on. Any Ideas. Regards Peter |

Sounds like either the lock or key or possibly both are getting worn. As said above, try another key and also the 'jiggle' and turn the wheel approach.

In the XC90 pages there is a discussion of the spirng loaded "relocker" pin which apparently can be removed to solve a balky lock cylinder. It is behind one of those small push in covers.

Unusually I have 4 keys but all act the same. The steering lock was not engaged and if I turn the wheel so it does engage it does not change the situation. The key just will not turn. Regards Peter

Tried the ignition this morning and it would no move. Left it a couple of hours in the sun and hey presto it worked but after 10 tries it decided not to play again. Where exactly is this pin that was mentioned. Regards Peter

If the link below applies, it would appear that the pin and spring are accessible from below. So if it were mine I would prise out the soft metal cap and then hope the spring and pin would fall out, maybe with jiggling or tapping. Then I would see if the lock would work.

I blasted the barrel with 2 short shots of WD40 way down in the lock, then used a vacuum puller to suck out any debris which it did do. The key now works almost 100% just the odd hesitation. I'll see how it goes. Regards Peter

If this approach is working you might want to try something like a molybdenum based lubricant/penetrating spray which dries. WD40 is good for cleaning but not ideal for long term as it can attract further dirt.
