Default Cylinder head removal

Dunno what the name of the engine is (you chaps probably know) but it's a 1600cc petrol injection 4 cylinder 16 valve twin overhead camshaft engine.

I want to replace the head gasket. Do I need to remove the camshafts? I had assumed the entire head could be removed in one lump, am I wrong? Re-reading the Haynes manual has got me wondering now. Especially when it starts talking about liquid gasket sealant applied with a roller and stuff - this is all since my time. I'd rather leave the camshafts in place and lift the head out as one unit without dismantling it. Is that possible? I can't even see the head bolts, but I believe if I remove the camshaft covers (according to Haynes) the camshafts will spring free. I'm picturing valve springs "boinging" out all over the place.

Am I worrying too much? Advice please!

Man, you know you're getting old when you suddenly realise the 'new' car is 16 years old. *shudder*

Hello!

I've removed the cylinder head from a T5 engine before (essentially the same but with an extra cylinder), yes you have to remove the cam cover as all the head bolts are under there, but the valve springs or buckets won't come out. The camshafts are held in place with the cam cover, so once removed you just simply lift the camshafts out. Sounds scary but it's a piece of cake as long as you mark everything (crankshaft postition, camshaft positions, and which camshaft is which). Tip-ex is your friend!

Hope this helps

Thanks, that's the reassurance I needed. I like the tip-ex tip too, I'll definately give that a try.
