After some discussions at the Volvo dealer it became clear that I was asking questions that they cannot answer and I have mailed Volvo direct with a request for them to clarify exactly what the expected and correct behavior is for this function.

I have also asked about the messaging system tells me that the rear seat belts have not been used when there is no one sat in the back of the car - seems to be stating the obvious to me

I will post any answer that I get back

The message will appear if anything are on the seats or in the footwell in front on the rear seat.

Perhaps it's related to opening the rear door before starting the car?!

Well just tried mine (XC60 MY2010 D5 High Performance Audio) set text in the menu system; the text appears a line at a time refreshing after quite a few seconds , but does not scroll. Tantilising waiting for the next part of the message to appear !
Cheers
Chris

I have received the answer from the oracle - or rather Volvo (very quick turnaround!)

They have stated that from MY2010 XC60, XC70 and s80 will not have scrolling text on the Radio Text option as this is distracting to the driver - therefore if you do have scrolling text on a MY10 car you have an older radio system (I have responded to them with this little nugget)

In relation to the seat belts I have a very long winded and unconvincing reply that states the reason for this behavior is that the system monitors the door being opened and assumes that someone has got into the car and that they have not put the seat belt on - and as you cannot see the back seat you need some warning (clearly the rear view mirror does not work in Volvo cars). It was further explained that you do not get this warning for the front seat as you can see if someone is sitting in it!

We have the answers, or at least as much as I am going to get, even if there appears to be a modicum of inconsistency in them

I like the scrolling in my 10My. Can't say it's a distraction. I think they took the function out in some cost saving exercise with a cheaper radio. Having said that, the dealer tells me that the bluetooth cuts out if you steer too much. It also wont let you dial out if any steering is applied!

Thanks for that.

As for the rear seats and the footwell, the instruction book clearly states that nothing should be placed there as if you would be hit from the back, the seats move backwards to prevent whiplash.

I assume someone sitting in the back won't have their knees crushed to stop the driver getting whiplash .. ? I think the way it is worded implies you shouldn't wedge anything into the rear foot well that would press against the front seats. I suspect the front seat doesn't move far in the event of being rear ended.

I think you are right about the seat not moving far. Knowing Volvo, they have a solution so most likely nothing to worry about.
