Headrests for estate back seats
Were headrests ever available on 245 rear seats?
I don't recollect seeing them on any I have worked on or owned. Cheers, James. |

Hi James
My 1989 240DL estate has them. They were never in the car until I bought it as the original owner was a sparky and had the back seat down all the time to fit in his wares. They are now where they should be.

I think they were standard from about 88 (?). I've seen head rests that attach to the dog guard on early models.

They became standard in 1989 I think, as my '88 didn't have them. The design of the rear seat changed too, the latches are different and the earlier seat doesn't have any provision for fitting headrests.

Late ones certainly did have them and I don't suppose it would be difficult to find some late-model seats and swap them over. I also saw, in the accessory catalogue, a centre head-rest which attaches to the dog guard. I'd like to get one but never seen one actually fitted. Surprising really as there's plenty of room for three people so you'd think that families would have them fitted as a safety measure.

Certainly standard from 1989 onwards, judging by the cars I've had.
I've always removed them because mine spend most of their time with the seats folded down, and it was a struggle locating the hidden catches to keep removing them. For an estate to be really useful the headrests need to retract into the seat back. A poor add-on bit of design in my opinion. |

Thanks for the replies.
I want to fit headrests x3 to the rear seat in our 79 265 to make it more child friendly. Also, I want to transplant the centre inertia belt from a later 945 since the centre lap belt is a bit ...basic. Seems the best route is to find a later seat back, skin it , and weld in the bracketry, The mountings are presumably strong enough to cope where the seat latches are. Anyone else done this? James. |

The seat backs are swappable as long as you switch the brackets on the bodywork as well. There are shims behind some brackets, which you can adjust to make the catch work smoothly.
