Smile oil problems

Hi all again, finally i v got new fuel pump on my v40 2.0T [1999] and now runs very well.I notice this morning when i chance the oil and oil filter lots of engine oil by the spark plugs. Most of the oil was on spark plug holes 3 and 4.Any ideas where its coming from ? Also which is the best oil for my engine? It has done 110.000 miles with a full Volvo service history so far [i do my own service since i got the car,two years ago] Also it has developed clicking noise when car starts from cold.It comes from the right side of the engine after 2 minutes the noise disappears. Thanks to all for your help.

Oil leak could be from the breather pipe that connects to the rocker cover. Check to see if the clamp is ok. If not bang on a new one. It could also have been someone with a careless hand at a previous oil change.

I use Castrol Magnatec 10w 40 semi synthetic (as recomended by my main dealer) in my T4 and have had no problems. I change mine at around 5 to 6 thousand miles, depending on the colour, to keep it nice and fresh. You're going to get mixed opinions on this though.

The clicking noise is probably your Pierberg (spelling) valve located at the top of the radiator. It's tied in with the carbon cannister and the return of fumes etc. You can replace but I wouldn't worry too much about it unless you want to give your money to the stealer.

Also could be rocker cover gasket leaking, try tightening the cover bolts, if no good, fit new gasket.

Did you say you had oil down the chambers? There are also O-rings that go between the rocker cover and head and they seal up the sparkplug chambers. I believe the rocker cover gasket is the chemical gasket type and a thin layer needs to be applied with a small gloss paint roller or an ink roller.

The cam cover ( volvos dont have rockers anymore ;-) ) is not just a cover it is an integral part of the head and does need experience and a couple of special tools to remove .. If you have variable cam timing you need to remove the pulleys which entails using a special tyool to re time them .. The cover MUST be lifted straight up . if you lift one end and not the other the camshaft thrust flanges will snap off .
Not as easy as it sounds , Anyway they dont leak , its more likely the oil filler car seal , they go hard after 60000 miles or so , about £1 at the dealer ..

:-D Cheers Clan. My correct use of part names isn't up to date :-D You're a hive of information.

I also had a little oil around the top of my 'cam cover' when I got my T4 and a new oil cap seal cured the problem.
