1989 Volvo 240 GL estate, manual
£2,000 ono
We are selling our well loved Volvo 240 estate, which we have owned since 2010. It is a 1989 model year 240 GL, though the badge on the replacement new tailgate says GLT as that’s what it came from. We deliberately chose this model year because we wanted a car with the old style tailgate but also the improved wiring and galvanised body from 1988 onward, as well as a 5 speed box and fuel injection for economy and ease of use and no catalytic converter to worry about. The car was purchased new by a Reverend under the Tourist and Diplomat scheme and started its life in Gibraltar, before returning to the UK in the late 1990s. The car is named Vincent, which was apparently given to it by the previous owner’s daughter. It has the super reliable Volvo red-block B200E engine, with mechanical Bosch K-Jet fuel injection, which has covered 180,632 miles. The last 41,000 of those miles were done under our ownership. The car has the Volvo 5-speed M47 manual gearbox, and the engine pulls very strongly with its recent new cambelt and crankshaft oil seal. It has original Volvo floor mats, an accessory genuine Volvo tape holder in front of the gearstick, and an accessory genuine Volvo ambient temperature gauge below the clock. Sadly the original Volvo radio stopped working and so an aftermarket one (DAB ready) is in place, but a correct Volvo radio can easily be sourced from ebay or a Volvo show if you want to complete the period look. Central locking works on all 5 doors, and there are two sets of keys. The front door pockets are all present and undamaged. Under the floor of the cavernous boot is a decent storage compartment. All the electrical equipment works as it should, including all the tailgate wiring which has been replaced recently, and often fails on these cars. The heater fan works on all 3 speeds, as does the heated rear screen. The front seats are electrically heated, there are front electric windows, power steering, four radio speakers, Osram Nightbreaker bulbs on the headlamps and a full complement of ceramic fuses. The car also has a tracker fitted, and all you would need to do is set up a giffgaff or similar pay-as-you-go SIM and insert into the tracking system. The reason we are selling the car is that it has recently been pressed into daily commuting service for a 73-mile round trip, and sadly a more modern diesel makes a lot more practical sense. A huge amount of work and effort has gone into maintaining the car over the last eight years, including: Regular oil and filter changes every 3,000 - 5,000 miles New left and right tailgate harnesses (Volvo) – May 2011 New Thermostat (Volvo) – Oct 2011 Near-side sill-end welded – Oct 2011 New cambelt tension pulley (fitted with previous Cambelt and Aux belts) (Volvo) – Oct 2012 4x Falken tyres - Spread over 2013, New coolant housing expansion cap tap (Volvo) – Apr 2013 New windscreen – Sep 2013 New Injector seals x8 and injector holders x4 (Volvo) – Feb 2014 New in-tank fuel pump, hose, ‘o’ ring and seal ring (Volvo) Apr 2014 New middle and rear sections exhaust boxes – May 2014 New front exhaust pipe – Jun 2014 New main fuel pump (Bosch) – Aug 2014 New Inlet Manifold Gasket (Volvo) – Oct 2014 New fuel injectors x4 (Bosch) – Oct 2014 New Valve cover gasket (Volvo) - Oct 2014 New Headlight anchorage clips (Volvo) – Dec 2014 New Viscous fan – Dec 2014 New Battery (Bosch) – Feb 2015 New track rod ends – Feb 2015 Blue seats (Norfolk Volvo Spares) - May 2015 New Fuel Filter (Volvo) – July 2015 Dent free rear passengers side door (No receipt) – Aug 2015 New washer pumps x2 (Febi) – Sep 2015 New battery positive and negative cable straps (Skandix)– Jan 2016 New Idle Air Valve (Volvo/Skandix) – Feb 2016 New water pump (Volvo) – Mar 2016 Used Ambient temperature Gauge and new VDO sender - Mar 2016 New exhaust back box – Jun 2016 New under engine tray cover (Parts for Volvos) – Jul 2016 New fuel pressure regulator (Bosch) – Jul 2016 New fuel injection system mounts x2 (Volvo) – Oct 2016 New track rods (Volvo) – Oct 2016 New Throttle cable (Brookhouse) – Oct 2016 New brake discs and brake pads all round (Volvo) – Oct 2016 Exhaust manifold gasket (Skandix) – Jan 2017 Replacement rust free tailgate – Mar 2017 New drivers door handle (Polar parts) – Mar 2017 New tailgate struts (Kilen) – Mar 2017 New radiator (Nissens) – July 2017 New front crankshaft bolt and Crankshaft pulley (Skandix) – Aug 2017 (Fitted Sept 2017) New Cambelt (At 172k) and Front Crankshaft oil seal (Volvo) – Sep 2017 (this had been a previous MOT advisory) New brake pipes x3 and brake hoses x2 (Volvo) – Oct 2017 New N/S/F Ball joint (Volvo) – Oct 2017 New Air hose between air filter and intake system (Volvo 340 Onderdelen) – Jan 2018 New Fuel tank sender (Brookhouse) – Jan 2018 Ignition and coil cables (Volvo) - Mar 2018 There are a few bad bits: Small patch of rust on the back of the nearside rear wheelarch - see picture There has been rust on the rear valance, which is hidden underneath the rear bumper, since we got the car. It has not got any worse, and so we haven’t ever dealt with it. Small rust bubbles on the scuttle panel coming through after a previous repair Some rust bubbles on the leading edge of the bonnet - see picture The ‘stays’ on both front doors have worn, meaning they don’t stay open unaided in any kind of breeze! One of the headlamp wipers doesn’t work A few minor age related dings So all in all this is a very solid and dependable example of the classic Volvo 240 estate. It is by no means perfect as it is 29 years old, but it has been lovingly cared for over the last 8 years. A clear HPI Certificate is available. MOT until 18 October 2018. More pics can be found at https://flic.kr/s/aHsmgrSUc6, and a short video at https://youtu.be/pplTXiBHm0c. The car is located in Cambridge, and any questions or viewing should be arranged by email to sionhudson(at)gmail.com. Cash on collection please. Thanks! I own it with my best mate (who tends to come with me to shows, so I'm sure you've met him), but it's been mainly used by him.
