Hi
I had simular issues with my 185 2006 model. Long story short. All new swirl flap system. It had collapsed and had failed air leak tests on the main seals so pressure was lost under boost. The turbo actuator was faulty, it looked OK but intermittently kept failing to move correctly. This was replaced with an an exchanged repaired item. Volvo only sell with a new turbo. Lastly the sensor on the intercooler outfeed pipe had failed. When the swirl flap system was replaced the injectors had to come out. Doing this damaged an injector so got a new one from volvo £140. Since this work was done have gone from 22mpg in town to 27mpg and on motorway from 28mpg to 35mpg and the car is smoother to drive. Ideally I should have taken the remaining four injectors to be cleaned but ran out of time. |

I bought a 56 plate 185bhp with turbo problems. New core and seals, new motor in the electronic actuator and the car now runs as it should do. Haldex pump was disgusting but a clean out and new brushes sorted that. All pipework was cleaned out and all oils and fluids were changed. Swmbo gets around 29mpg on average but does go up to around 35 on motorway use. Having said that she does have lead boots.

I have already had the new turbo (complete incl actuator direct from factory) mucho cash....
Injectors only remaining possibility except timing... timing kit on way from amazon so perhaps this will cure things... performance went down immediately after putting car back together, whilst I expected it to improve it has not, and I cannot see how injectors can all suddenly go bad, If timing does not get me to 35+mpg I try Injectors, also....maybe a diy strip and clean in an ultrasonic bath... |

I have a my2011 XC90 185, and I am NOT a boy racer by any stretch of the imagination.
Yet I rarely exceed 32mpg on long runs, and only manage low 20s around town. |

I have a 56 d5 auto and don’t drive it hard and I’m getting 27-28 around town and 33-35 on a run depending how loaded up it is.

I read figures in this thread of 36mpg and 40mpg and I don’t believe it for one minute.
I absolutely believe that people’s trip computer says that, as mine indicates upto 36mpg average however by calculation 36 on the trip computer is about 31.8mpg in reality and that’s with the newer 200ps version. I advise anyone averaging 36mpg to calculate by hand. |

Mine is worked out from me working it out, I filled up yesterday and worked out 27.6 and my trip computer says 31.2 so definitely believe what you say.

The Hans Christian Andersen nature of the Volvo trip computers for MPG is the subject of many a thread on here .... and most other manufactures/cars for that matter ... work it out using the same pump and the same number of "clicks" every time, then use 4.546 to divide the litres to converted to gallons.
Much more accurate than most on-board computers IMO
