Default XC70 D5 AutoTranny (done to death)

Good afternoon all,

Long time since I last posted, hope you are all well.

So I have to do the tranny fluid on the family work horse.

2004 (54) XC-70 D5 163.

I shall keep it simple, I shall be draining from underneath (next to the lower boost hose, so partial fluid drop), run it for a while then drop again till it runs clear(ish) red.

So will this fluid be ok? it meets the JWS3309 spec and compatible with the
AW55-50 (Aisin Warner) unit.

https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-60163-f...nese-cars.aspx

Spec:
◦JASO M315 TYPE 1A

Recommended:
◦JWS 3309/TYPE T-IV

Cheers all

I'm sure it is, but I've always used this, which is available in 5l and is a bit cheaper:

How does it shift as of now?

Here's my story on a AW-55 with 100K miles at the purchase. Was still on the original Volvo fluid, shifting with almost imperceptible kicks (almost fine).

Replaced the fluid with Toyota Type IV (3309). For the first minutes it shifted like a new car, then started to shift worst than before the fluid change. 4 years/25000 miles fast forward, 2-3 harsh shift, 1-2 a little kick.

It's that because the solenoids get stuck, the transmission can't really adapt to a fresh fluid. Running the adaptative mode in Vida can do worst, as the solenoids can not perform like in a new car - a Volvo tech told me he had transmission that started to slip.

My 2c on this, if the transmission is shifting 'fine' don't replace the original fluid or at least don't replace more than 2-3 liters, unless the car is towing. Better replace 2 liters maybe once a year to refresh it a little. The best for long term usage is to replace the three main solenoids and do an adaptative reset in Vida.

But it's just my case. There are many people out there who mentioned improved shifting after a fluid change.

All it is doing at the moment is shifting back into first (when slowing to a junction) with a nasty jolt, so I thought change the fluid for now just as a first step.

The car has had to endure a really evil pitted lane (Leading to the farm) with a steep gradient.

The car is on 110,000 miles, in the realms of failure / not operating like it once did.

Cheers guys

Ah ok, I had this slam when slowing to a stop on an incline (going upwards). New fluid removed almost entirely this slam, but keep in mind that the actual problem is the three main solenoids that don't operate as they should. But for a light fix the fluid will help (although you may find it will start to shift harsher 2nd to 3rd)

On my 2005 XC70 D5 163 bhp and 5 speed Aisin Warner box ( now sold ) I changed the fluid with a series of sump dumps immediately after buying it with 162k on the clock.

The oil was absolutely filthy, thin as water and stunk although to be fair the box was still pretty smooth .

I had no issues whatsoever with the box by doing the sump dumps and the biggest improvement came when I deleted the old adaptation via VIDA and allowed the car to relearn itself.

When I sold the car with 185k on the clock the box was silky smooth and the oil cherry red.

Honestly, change the oil.

I bought my 2007 XC90 in February this year with 119k on the clock but the later 6 speed box.

Again the box was fine but I'm now onto my fourth sump dump and have reset the adaptations as well as the counter.

Look after the box with relatively cheap oil changes and the expensive bits will hopefully look after themselves!
