Cambelt life

Hi all. Just booked my volvo in at volvo and found out that my V50 2.0D Cambelt has a lifespan of 144k miles or 10 years. That's pretty a long time. Anyone know why??

Also the service cost would of been £1490 but thanks to this its now £380

Yes the latest 4 cylinder VEA engines are 144k. I believe the 5cylinder engines are 108k.
I guess it is improvements in materials and possibly (probably?) engine designs. My 2007 Fiat has intervals of 75k or 5yrs. My old Lancia in 1992 was 30k or 3yrs (and I ended up bending 11 out of 16 valves after only 22k when it snapped at about 39 months old! )

It’s a long way isn’t it. Personally I wouldn’t go further than 75k for the cost and amount of damage that would occur

Yes that's normal 150k as you are on 12500 service intervals The belts have Kevlar in them and are lined with a Teflon substance , No worry whatsoever , Never heard of a failure on this engine .
Where did you get the 144k figure from ? That is for 18000 mile service intervals ...

£1100 for a cambelt and aux belt change is extortionate It is a fairly straightforward job 2.5 hours labour

Where did you get the 144k figure from ? That is for 18000 mile service intervals ...

£1100 for a cambelt and aux belt change is extortionate It is a fairly straightforward job 2.5 hours labour

There will be no Teflon left at 100k and your assumption is sound only if there is no belt contamination etc. I wouldn’t go that far.

I have never heard of any cases of broken belts or tensioner failures on these Ford/Peugeot/Citroen engines in my professional career since volvo started using them in 2004 to 2011...

I'm pretty sure this is the Ford engine. The service manager told me the Focus (same engine) cambelt change is at 110,000 miles or ten years whichever comes first.

I have a focus 1.6tdci (2014) which is 125,000 miles.

I see. I had the same thought about the price. A lot for a Cambelt change. It Is at the volvo dealership though.

It's a 2010 with 88000 on clock. Been an expensive year atm so next year it'll be done. Maybe not at volvo though.

Also I don't really go above 3000rpm so there's not too much stress on the belt

VW recommend four years, Audi five years.
