Theres a very nice V40 1.9d Sport Lux for sale in the S/V40 section. Very well equipped and only £2800. Might be worth seeing if there's any local meets happening near you. Good chance to look at a variety of cars in the flesh.

I suppose I don't necessarily need a bigger car but it would just make day to day journeys more comfortable for me, as I'm always in the car and the Fiesta I just find too small. I used to love driving my parents old Mondeo as it was more suited to my size as I'm quite tall. Good news that the back seats do fold down because it does make them that little bit more practical. I was looking at a friends Passat today and I'm really starting to come around to the saloon boots (although the passat boot is larger). Will look into the S60s...but I'm not bothered about a car being "cool"....comfort takes priority over being cool or sporty for me

What about an S70? Superb quality car, smooth, quiet, one of Volvo's best saloons ever. A very very good one could be yours for under £1000, and then you could save the rest of your £5,000 budget to pay for servicing and fuel....

Based on the experience of our S70 and V70, £4000 would pay for 20,000 miles of petrol, or 5 years of service and mantenance!

Absolutely, you can not go wrong with an S70, they look so good, drives so smooth, if it is a turbo, then they will accelerate beautifully. 1998 is your choice, I would avoid the 99 and 20 models; electronic throttle control could be troublesome.
