Volvo use standard OBDII protocol so a £10 ELM327 will give you the fault codes.

you might be interested to know that the new SPA cars from 2015 use standard Ethernet connection to VIDA now , Volvo have no way of using the old OBDII interface although i would imaging the standard OBDII Is available for the minimum legal requirements .. so would not be very comprehensive ..

I am just wondering whether or not it might be worthwhile contacting Volvo UK under a Freedom of Information (or other similar) Request to request some data regarding these issues.

Something along the lines of requesting details of the number of the VEA D4 180 and D4 190 variants which have been sold, and the number of each variant which have had EGR Coolers etc replaced under the service actions. Also querying how many of each variant have had the issues with the valve seals.

This would give weight to any legal argument as to whether the 180 version has a fundamental flaw in its design that Volvo are trying to bury.

My ELM works fine on my car and has read and cleared (where appropriate) all the codes mine has thrown up.

OK, I'm getting really fed up now as nobody seems to be able to tell me what is wrong with my car.

I am getting fumes from around the back right hand side of the engine. Volvo have missed it twice, and my local garage can't see where it's coming from and want £350 to strip everything off and then see whats gone and then give me a quote to fix it.

The car has recently had the inlet manifold replaced as part of the safety recall. It has been suggested this could be an injector seal gone.

Can someone have a look at this video and see if they have any idea what might be the cause (long shot but worth asking and the garage can't even do that with the car in front of them!) or if it is likely to be connected to the recent recall. I'm not saying the work Volvo did caused this, it didn't. I had the fumes before it went in which is why when I contacted them they had mine straight in.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Car is in Birmingham if anyone can recommend someone to look at it for me.

Video is here.

To me this doesn't look like it is coming from the engine but rather the exhaust pipe area. Maybe something leaked on it or some lambda sonde isn't screwed in tight enough leaking gas or so.

Can you get one of those illuminated mirrors on a telescopic stick down there?

It's not just fumes, it looks like a fair bit of smoke so I would have thought it would be quite a visible leak if you can get to it.

OK, all sorted. It IS the rocker cover gasket leaking and it WAS SPOTTED AND REPORTED by the technician when it went into the dealers for the recall work.

What happened was Volvo were the customer because they paid for the recall work. I was not given any paperwork or told about the leak because I wasn't the customer. So I never knew about the leaking gasket.

The car is now booked in for next week to have the leaking gasket repaired and as a good will gesture the dealers are discounting the repair price because of the distress caused when we went away on holiday and got stuck on at the motorway services with smoke coming from the engine.

So all in all I am now a lot happier. I know what is wrong, it is going to be repaired, and I do have faith in the dealers again knowing they never missed this in the first place.

Thank you to everyone that commented with help/suggestions. I did appreciate it.

Glad that it is sorted but can't help finding it a bit strange that they did the recall, found a leaky gasket, reported it to VOLVO but did not even mention it to you, the owner.
Cannot see how VOLVO would be in the least interested in your leaky gasket.
I am beginning to think that the VOLVO dealers are working in a parallel universe!
