Default Noisy door

Hi,
The front driver door on my 95 850 has developed a loud popping/crackling sound when opening & closing. The noise seems to be coming from the middle bracket thing. Any ideas what might be the cause? A colleague mentioned that a bracket may need welding if so any idea how much?
Many thanks.

Try the bolts that hold the door stay to the body for tightness, they may just need nipping up.
And grease the sliding parts of the stay mechanism.

There have been many posts on these check strap problems (second main problem 1st being aircon on the volvos).
I had the same problem with mine. It needed welding, which involved taking the door off and spot welding the pillar where the check strap meets.
Only cost £30+vat.
You need to get it seen to sooner rather than later.

It won't need welding if you tighten up the bolts BEFORE they tear away from the pillar, but you do need to get the strap replaced ASAP.

Not something to leave, because welding is expensive and it shows lack of care for the car which will put off any future buyer.

Greetings,

I've had this on my 95 T5 - it was down to lose bolts on the door (by the restraining strap), and the problem disappeared when they were tightened up.

Many thanks guys for the info.
Having checked all the bolts, re-greased etc. I took the car into the local Volvo specialist and welding of the bracket to the pillar was required at £175. Seems this is a common problem/weakness.

£175 seems a bit steep !!

My 95 T5 had the same problem. The spot welds on the bottom of the check strap broke away. I took it down to a mates garage, we peeled back the rubber, hit it with the welder, let it cool, replaced the rubber, job sorted. 15 minutes work......

Been fine ever since. Looks like you paid over the odds to me.
