Firstly, that's completely distasteful for it to be on YouTube. I'm surprised the video hasn't been pulled.

It's not really a fair comparison. A 2+ tonne brand new SUV vs an older model Renault saloon. Car safety improves with every new model so the Renault is at several disadvantages. I doubt many similar cars would fair any better against the XC90 or similar types.

Renault actually perform very well on the Euro NCAP tests but the offside crash test is performed against a simulation of a similarly sized car so you can never get a test comparison of small car vs large car

I heard that "joke" about 25 years ago :-)

That is because they were built to pass them after their horrendous cars before , and NCAP features became law . They don't go the extra mile though . It wasn't just Renault , all french cars were like matchboxes regarding safety . these days most cars have met in the middle all acceptable but some a bit less unsafe than others ...

I think Volvo are the only company that go and visit real world crashes involving their cars to see how they actually perform in a real crash. Putting seat belt tech out patent free to all manufacturers is something they can never get enough kudos for from me. Pity the drug manufacturers can't take a leaf out of Volvo's book.

why would anyone else ? it costs money and they don't like spending money they don't have to as long as their cars pass the relevant laws .. . Volvo have been going out to as many accidents as they can involving vovos in Sweden for getting on for 50 years now . It is part of their DNA as such ..

It reminds me of a ford in america which had a fuel tank just behind the rear bumper and had a crash from behind resulting in death . In the court case Ford admitted that it was cheaper to pay out compensation to victims than to re design it into a safer car . It must have passed the construction laws at the time when it was built i guess . this was many years ago ..

Didnt someone write a book about the subject of the american motor manufacturers called "unsafe at any speed"? Think James May mentioned it recently on his cars of the people prog.

That was the Ford Pinto - a shameful affair.

Ford still going strong though despite the attitude and disdain for their customers.

Quite true - that was a model of the Ford Pinto, someone leaked a memo to the press where they had calculated that they would save $2M by just paying out compensation rather than re-design...
