Default Changing Wheel Size for Winter Tyres

I have a XC60 2019 fitted with 20" wheels. For winter tyres I wish to change these to 18" wheels, as there is a better selection for 18" wheels, plus i believe the slightly higher sidewall will give better flexibility, therefore grip.
I have managed to get a good prive through volvo, link to wheels below.

My question is the parts person stated that I would need a software update. It does say on the volvo website that you need to check clearance etc, however as you will see from the attachment the width is less 7.5% not more, therefore running out of clearance will not be an issue. Has anyone changed wheel size on a late XC60, if so was it necessary to update the software ?

Read through this thread,
https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showt...=299548&page=2

It explains what the software update does, most people dont bother if going down in size as they only have to pay again when changing back after winter.

Speedo, steering lock may be affected especially if increasing size.

Depends if the rolling circumference has changed considerably. This website will tell you www.willtheyfit.com

I have 19 standard and 18 winters and no need to updare software.

Carlisle Volvo have always been very competitive on winter wheel sets and will send them anywhere in the UK for I think 31 quid on a pallet. I was quoted 1600 by them for Nokians on 19 inch 6 spoke XC90 T8 wheels. I very nearly went with them but then managed to pick up some almost brand new summers on the same wheels from a dealers clearance sale for 800 so used those wheels and bought the winter tyres locally for 720 quid. 1520 all in and now I also have 4 spare almost brand new summers in the garage as well.....

I just fitted Continental All season tyres and they seem great. Need some white stuff now to give them a real test.

I have just changed to mine to winter wheels. Summers are 20", winters 18". The rolling circumference of the different tyres is approximately the same. This is my 4th winter with them and have never had a problem, not had any software changes or steering rack modifications, I just run a TPMS calibration each time I swap one set for the other.

I'm currently also seeking a set of wheels for winter use (albeit for our Sportage) and was considering going down to smaller wheels due to their more plentiful availability.

Has anyone had a problem when they've notified their insurance company that they've fitted smaller wheels?

I fitted my winter wheels & tyres this morning. I purchased a set of genuine Volov wheels complete with Continental, WinterContact TS 850P. These were ordered from volvo on Monday, arrived on Thursday.
If anyone is interested these are the wheels i went for, volvo part number 32147792
https://accessories.volvocars.com/en...CC-517101/2019

My original wheels were 20", new winter wheels 18". I was told by the dealership that I would require a software update, due to speedometer inaccuracy, & steering angle.
I have been out for a drive, I can confirm that there is no need for the software update. If you went from 17 or 18 to 22" then the additional width may may cause rubbing requiring a software update to limit steering angle.
This website is a good source of info when changing wheel sizes
https://tiresize.com/comparison/
There is a 0.3% change in circumference, from originals, I checked the speedometer against GPS which the GPS gave me the same readings 3mph less, this is the same as with the original tyres fitted.

Thoughts so far, the ride is definitely smoother, grip we will see.

A couple of pictures of the before & after

Can you reduce steering maximum angle with software to allow bigger wheels then? I was sure lock to lock maximum was a mechanical setting.....
