Default OBD fault code reader reading fault or allowing reset

I've just purchased a fault code reader from ebay (see pic) and when connecting it the display shows a single fault.

However, when I try to view the fault, or clear the fault, neither of these options work.

I wondered, therefore, whether the fault (which has caused the Check Light to come on) might not be one I can reset, as I've read that not every code or fault can be cleared by these units?

My car's a petrol 1.6 XS V40 X reg 2000 ph2 model.

Any suggestions or thoughts appreciated as I don't think it's the fault code reader that's broken.

Which check light is on?

OBD2 readers can only read 'powertrain' codes.

The engine shaped one. On my S40, it'd come on & then go off again after a while & this time round I thought I'd buy a reader so I could check what's up.

Have only had the V40 for about 2 wks, not come on before but did appear a couple of days ago so thought I'd buy a reader to check.

It doesn't feel at all different to drive compared to when the light was off (ie doesn't feel like it's in limp mode - and NO laughing about it being a 1.6!)

Perhaps I've bought the wrong reader for what I need to check - from what you say

didn't realise / think about 2 versions, saw II and thought it'd be backwards-compatible
