[QUOTE=XC90Mk1;2744997]Volvo Eastbourne are on EBay and offer substantial discounts as standard. If you speak to Eastbourne Volvo (Chris or Ashley), or ask your local dealer for a discount (it’s not a 3yo car) then the brakes will not cost much more than pattern parts anyway.

The maximum discount I have been able to get from my local dealer (Southampton, Winchester - you will know who it is) is 10% but admittedly not on brake parts. Is that the sort of level you are talking about? I suspect a pattern caliper would be a lot lower than 10% below Volvo list price?

Following up on my last post I have just spoken with Caffyns Eastbourne for a new front caliper (because the V70 is on axle stands and I need one!). Their price is approx £230 net (exchange). Euro car parts are at £99. Both are on back order so that's a problem for me anyway, but the price difference is substantial.

Try to let the brakes cool down before using them properly after as this will warm them up a bit! Also don't do more than about half a mile at any one time doing this as the heat could glaze the pads, you may feel more comfortable doing two stints of 1/4 mile each and letting the brakes cool in between.
I've found in the past that sometimes when you have a pad imprint, you cannot clear it by using the brakes as the wear pattern of polish corrosion is lighter than the disc and hence sometimes it can get worse with use - the only way to recover in these situations is to skim the disc or replace it.

It's definitely worth a try though.

Could you not overhaul the caliper you have?

So I ordered front and rear pads from Volvo in April.
List £92 and £70.50
Discounted to £50.60 and £38.78.

Those figures are ex vat so VAT on top.

Now granted, that’s more than pattern parts I am sure. It’s just not a lot more.

Try http://biggred.co.uk/

They do reconditioned calipers, master cylinders and so on. More likely to have them in stock or could turn round your caliper in a few days if you send it to them.

What ATE number is stamped on your calipers?
I have a pair of brand new ATE/genuine Volvo calipers available to send out. Stamped 949 and 950

Yup. I have a seal kit on order. The caliper that was supposed to be arriving today hasn't! If the kit arrives first I'll overhaul the old one and reject the replacement caliper.

That's not bad - nearly half price. I suspect the reason is that pads (and discs) are high volume sales as "consumables" whereas there is not as much competition in the market for calipers.

From recollection the numbers are the same but I will go and check this evening. What is the "blob" of what looks like filler or weld at the top of each caliper in your photo?
