Notice that this engine have done 220,000 km with just one oil change and that despite the sludge they didn't have to replace the camshafts, the camshaft bearings were good and they didn't even look at pistons or crankshaft/bearings. Back in the 1970s and 1980s, motorcycle engines - with regular oil changes - showed much greater wear after only 25,000 km.

So while I still wouldn't recommend going for ages on the same oil, I think the video proves very well that changing the oil every 5,000 miles is a waste of money.

Fair point. I think over the last 20 years, the main push in oil development has been on increased oil change intervals and improving fuel economy - and this doesn't always go hand in hand with the best engine protection.
