DRIVe Button on 2011 XC70 D5
Hi All, I'm looking at buying a facelift model 2011 plate XC70 D5 SE Lux AWD (Manual) at the moment and it has a DRIVe button on the centre console, which activates a message on the speedo display with the curly DRIVe logo.
There doesn't appear to be much info online as to what it does. There is no DRIVe logo anywhere else on the car, and there is rear drive shafts so it's an AWD. It has a D5 engine, but apparently increased fuel economy and lower road tax. Questions are: 1) What does the button do?! 2) How does it reduce the emissions so that an AWD D5 fits in the lower tax band? 3) If the button exists on the centre console, is this a DRIVe car without the sticker on the back? If so why does the log book say 212 BHP?! Any help would be much appreciated and I hope you excuse my probably stupid questions. Thanks in Advance. And also - thanks to all of you that (unknowingly) have provided me with excellent info over the past 13 years of owning my P2 V70, which now needs to move to a new home. You've been a great help Last edited by psycholist; Feb 18th, 2019 at 20:15. |

Ok, I've now found the manual online - I needed the 2012 manual so I guess the 2012 car was available with a 2011 plate for a bit?
Anyway, Quote:

I assume it has the large center display, above the center console?
Then it's a 2012. Mine is, but I got it delivered in the second half June 2011, so they come out early. At that time, D5 with manual gear box supported start/stop. Mine is an automatic, but that took another year before it got start/stop. There's nothing else to you car than the start/stop function. The button is just used to disable the function, if you for some reason don't want it active. The D5 engine is the standard 215 hp (give or take local market deviations), or 230 hp with Polestar. The fuel consumption is reduced by the DrivE system only assuming you stop now and then. While driving it's the same. |

The 2012 model was introduced in 2011 at some point, think it may have been when Ford was bought out but I'm not 100% sure, I'm sure Google would let you know.
2012 model had the updated centre dash layout. D5 power went from 205 to 215. 215 is twin turbo not sure of the 205 setup. DrivE only switches on and off the start/stop.

I've got a 2015 MY XC70 registered in May 2014 and built around April. The 205bhp D5 had the first versions of the twin turbo engine. The Stop-Start function was available in manual cars from MY 2012 but only available with Geartronic from MY 2016.

Alright smarty pants, I stand corrected!
The 2.0L 5 cylinder D3 with Geartronic did have Stop-Start as well.

Yes, and other models got it as soon as they had the solutions ready.
Start/stop with Geartronic boxes requires the gear box to be fitted with an electric oil pump, which can maintain oil pressure in the box when the engine is stopped. This oil pressure normally comes from the converter's oil pump, but when it's not rotating, you lose that function. Maintaining the oil pressure is necessary to be able to start driving again, as soon as the engine has started. Without the electric pump, you would have to wait for a while, until the oil pressure in the gear box is back to normal again. |
