£660 for intercooler hose replacement, sound right?

XC90 D5 has got a split intercooler hose, started of with slight "whoosing", now down on power.

Had it diagnosed at a local garage (which cost £75+VAT) and they have diagnosed as above split intercooler hose.

They want £325 for the hose and clips, £225 labour all plus VAT.

This sounds very very expensive for fit and supply of a hose. Does this sound about right?

I have replaced 2 of the rubber turbo pipes, from memory I think they were around £70 from Volvo and took 15 minutes to replace, a very easy DIY job.

I would be ordering the offending pipe from Volvo, fitting it myself (ask a friend to help if your car skills are not very good) and staying away from that garage.

Thanks - I have reluctantly paid him his £90 diag fee and got the car back.

This is what was on the invoice

Investigated hissing noise and vehicle stuttering whilst driving, connected the diagnostic machine and checked for stored fault codes, found turbocharger boost pressure fault. Raised on the ramp and checked the charge air system, removed covers etc to gain access, found the intercooler pipe at the turbocharger broken, replacement pipe required and a recommend a forced re-generation afterwards for the DPF

So it's the intercooler pipe at the turbocharger. Is this still one of the rubber turbo pipes? I might have a go at changing it myself if its not too difficult to access.

I'm assuming he's referring to the pipe in the attached photo? If so, it's £20 quid and ten minutes work. It's very common you'll find a lot of D5 owners have had to do this, tons of information on these forums. Or you can keep the stock resonator and just replace the seals as that's usually what causes the boost leak, but it works out about the same price and generally easier to just change the whole thing.

Definitely avoid that garage in future, Those prices are nothing less than extortion.

Thanks for the link, it does indeed sound like this. I'll take a look tomorrow.

You mention it's 10 minutes although some of the forum posts say it's *extremely* fiddly and requires a complex set of multiple socket extensions to reach the top clip.

In your opinion is it fittable by someone with basic (although not not-existant), skills (me) and a basic set of tools (spanners/socket set etc...)?

Reading some of the forum posts and in lack of any real instructions or pictures/videos on how to fit it online, I'm starting to think buying the part and asking a mechanic to fit it might be best

I reckon you will succeed in doing it yourself. It's definitely worth having a go, you might learn some new swear words along the way. It can be fiddly but I wouldn't say its extremely difficult, with a decent socket set with extension bars you shouldn't have much issue in reaching the upper most jubilee retaining clip. That is the most fiddlyest (is that even a word?) Take a look at this short video to get a glimpse of what it looks like from underneath

If you aren't feeling confident in your abilities it would still work out substantially cheaper to buy the part and pay someone to fit it. But how do you know you can't do it yourself unless you try.

Sounds very expensive, way over the odds. I'm not trying to name and shame in any way, but was this like a back street garage (non Volvo Specialist)? Stay clear of them because that's a complete rip off. I wouldn't trust them charging prices like that.

If you're looking for a mechanic to do it, there's some good Volvo Specialists in Manchester... Hallmark Volvo in Stockport and Trevor Burgess in Hyde. These aren't rip off merchants and they definitely know their stuff with Volvo's. They're always busy though, so expect at least a week wait. Phone to check for availability if you wish and keep in mind that neither of them are open on Saturday's.
