I currently have the very same symptoms as the first poster.
Cruise worked for a good few miles last night but after braking for a slower car the Cruise lamp went out and would not come on again. I decided to stop, switch off the ignition and restart the engine. Once I did that the Cruise worked again.
I use Cruise a lot so need to find a fix for this.

Post Cruise control intermittent fault

Cruise availability recently became intermittent, also as someone else experienced had an isolated failure back in the very cold weather, this also occurred on a previous S60.

The dealer read the codes and pronounce a new brake sensor require - £234.48 , so though a look was in order. The bit that moved with the pedal looked like it could stick in the plastic and could due contraction be a bigger problem in reduced ambient temperature.

A sniff of WD40 seemed logical - so far everything is fine, a few bob saved for something else.

Just experienced the same fault on my V50 - cruise control not functioning, but appeared to engage when restarted the car on arrival at work this morning. Will ask the dealer to investigate when car in for service later this month.

I have just collected a new Brake Position Sensor from Volvo. £105.
After I have fitted it I will post as to whether or not my problem is solved.
I'm hoping the Check Engine lamp goes out too!
