Really Stuck In Two Minds With My S60
Evening All
So glad the site's back up and running, I've been lost for the last 24 hours!!! So, this is my quandary. Last year I purchased an S60 D5 SE registered in December 2005/55 plate from a fellow (and I'd imagine now ex) forum member. Unfortunately it appears he knowingly sold me a pup!! Main issues were cutting out when left to idle for more than a few minutes, non working fuel guage and then the biggy, knackered valves in the geartronic gearbox!!! The cutting out and fuel guage turned out to be one of the same thing. The intank pick up pipe had a crease in it and had been routed incorrectly which then didn't allow the n/s sender to have free movement. One modification latet and its all fine again. The gearbox is a different matter. I don't think the job itself is beyond my capabilities, but I'm not sure if I should spend circa £600 on a new valve body, oil (12litres of 3309 if memory serves?) And the massively expensive Volvo sealant for when I put the valve body cover back on. I'm now at a crossroads on what the correct cause of action should be. Do I a) Bite the bullet and just change the valves hoping beyond hope that this will fix the fault (I'm 99% sure it will) and it won't need anything else to make the valves all work ok. Or do I b) Advertise the car for offers around £1000, being completely upfront about the gearbox, and put the £600 I was going to spend into getting something else. I'll be honest, I don't 'Love' this car like I did my last S60. I can't explain why that is, I just don't. It's the facelifted 183bhp engined one and my last was an 03 with the 163bhp engine. That car was amazing with 346000 miles on it, this is just meh, with only 179000 miles on it. So, what do I do!! Cheers all Wayne |

I was in a similar quandary.
I have a fully loaded V70 T5. 2005 model, registered days before the road tax went to £500 (mine is £295). Needed a load of work. Full service (the big one minute timing belt which was done a couple of are ago). Some faults here and there. Suspension shot. Cosmetic work needed. The list goes on. Anyway, figured if I bought a replacement car then there's no guarantee that I won't need to spend megabucks on it 6 months own the line. I'm therefore spending £3k on the one I've got after which, with the exception of routine maintenance and the odd big ish repair, I'm hoping will deliver another 10 - 12 years of brilliant motoring. What's to say your £1,600 replacement motor won't need big money spending? |

I had similar concerns with the landrover. Started with welding new sills into it, ended up as O/S inner wing, both rear wheel arches and rear body cross member, four and a half months and many £s later there was still the question of the chassis.
Now in the six years I have owned it I have had the gearbox rebuilt, fitted raised air intake and breathers, and generally know the ins and outs of the car so do I buy another with a better chassis or buy a new chassis? I took the option to spend the money on the car I know, £2000 chassis on order. If you like the car spend the money on it, if it's a so so car for you get rid of it because you will only regret spending the money next time a fault appears. Some cars you click with others you just hate. I had a S40 like that, 3 months and it was gone, fully loaded or not. Paul. |

Just a thought - have you tried an oil (and filter?) change?
