If you have 5cyl Volvo engine, the DPF regen will not happen unless you are lucky and reach pre-defined soot threshold under these 30mins:

4-cyl Volvo VEA engines, however, get rid of dpf soot much sooner even at moderate higway speeds (with so-called passive regeneration).

It is the 5 cyl, AWD D5 XC60 I drive and have done for 5 years now. So I have to assume the car is doing everything it should, when it should as I’ve never seen a msg or light indicating a soot problem.
I have since my early cars used Red-Ex on a regular basis but the last 12 months switched to a “Cetane Booster” at every fill, at a rate of 1ml - 1 litre (12 months motoring = approx 500ml). It may help, I’m hoping it does.

“DPF Soot Levels

Level 1: Engine control module (ECM) starts combustion of soot particles in the particle filter
during highway driving.
Level 2: Engine control module (ECM) starts combustion of soot particles in the particle filter
during normal driving.
Level 3: A text message, Soot filter full, is sent to the Driver information module (DIM), and
the control module sets a DTC.
Level 4: Engine control module (ECM) can no longer start combustion of soot particles of its
own initiative. A further text message, Engine system service required, is sent to the Driver
information module (DIM), and another fault code is sent.
Level 5: More than 100 g soot . Combustion of soot particles cannot be started using the
diagnostic tool.

Engine---Particle Filter----Level 1----Level 2----Level 3----Level 4----Level 5
2.0---------ccDPF--------------NA-----------27g----------32g----------36g----------100g” End quote

I can only read limited information on my Elm327 with Car Scanner on an iPhone. Soot levels are shown in %. Does anyone know how to convert the grams for my D4 engine to %? Are the grams roughly equivalent to the % figure I can read?

I do probably too much urban mileage to be good for my DPF but have woken up to the problems thanks to this forum. I’ve already had to have one oil change under warranty due to overfilling.

So far I’ve never seen regeneration take place at less than motorway speeds although this could be the circumstance of urban driving. All roads near me seem congested. On the motorway regens usually complete (from 100% to 0%) in about 10 minutes so it seems pretty efficient when it does commence.

8.4g on diagnostic tool vs 100% on car scanner. Short after regeneration started soot masd went up to 15.8g. Then slowly went to 0.04g and 0.00.
It was my first time that i have used diagnostic tool during regeneration
