Default Rattling 850

My '94 850 has developed a rattle at the offside rear. It sounds rather like a loose seat belt buckle but is NOT, and I'm never quite sure if it is coming from inside or outside the car. The shocks are probably a little weak now but would that cause a rattle? Any ideas please.

The mounts at the top of the shocks do that, I packed mine up with a couple of big washers, fixed it !!!, thats not saying thats what your prob is of course.
Is it a wagon as the rear seats rattle a bit at the locking tabs on the body, a bit of plastic tubing, split and put on each one fixes that.

Default Curing rattles

Judiciously applied Blu-Tak can also cure rattling trim, you just need someone to locate and apply while it happens!

Could be the anti-roll bar drop links on the rear suspension? When does it make the noise?

A very long shot, but check the brake caliper isn't loose.
I had a rattle that I could NOT find - I emptied the boot, crawled about underneath, did all sorts...
Was a loose caliper...

My 850 '96 estate had a rattle like this. It was the rear top shock metalastic mouting that has come unbonded. Easy to replace, by removing the wooden deck and there it is. One side failed last year, and the otherside failed this year. Should have replaced both LH and RH at the same time. The last one cost me £23 from Volvo.

My 98 V70 rattles and bangs on every little pot hole, which on Cornish Roads is every few feet, and as for speed bumps!!!!!!!

Think it's either the back seats or the child seat assembly in the boot, will have to get back there and have a look cos it's quite annoying,

the rear shock mounts can easily and cheaply be replaced on 855 models, as so...http://www.vpcuk.org/forums/t8996-ho...s-855-ph2.html
cheers

Going back a while here, but am thinking mine could have this problem....

It makes the rattle as described, but i've noticed the rear brake(s) 'sticking' when i've not used the car for a couple days.

I also noticed that the rear n/s disc is only shiny on a small-ish area, whilst the rest is rust covered (after driving), which to me means that the brake pad is only half in contact with the disc (so would a loose caliper cause this?)....

I'm not very mechanically minded, but working this theory through in my head it seems probable/possible!

Can anyone help/advise further??

Many thanks,

Joe

Hi Joe,

that does sound like bad news. I seem to remember the rear caliper is held on with two bolts, so you could check if it's that by removing the relevant wheel and testing them gently with a wrench or spanner.

Could the anti-rattle spring have come loose?

There's some photos which might help on a HowTo I did, here:

http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showpost.php?p=314082

How is the general condition of the pads and disc on that corner? If the disc has quite a lip on it, or the pads are worn down it might be time to consider replacament anyway.

Cheers, Pete
