Default Atlantis wheels/tyres

Greetings all: interested to hear if anyone else has had problems with slow leakage on the standard fit wheels/tyres? My local indy has had several attempts at re-sealing, fitting new valves etc. and now recommends getting them refurbished. It's just the 2 rear wheels, fronts are fine. They are on a '54 plate D5, 85k mileage.

Hi,

Yep, same problem on mine! My worst one was the offside rear and i got a local garage to remove the tyre and you could see that the paint on the bead edge of the wheel was flaking/peeling quite badly. I assume that air escapes between the flaking paint and the alloy rim.

We rubbed the paint gently away, replaced the tyre with some additional sealing compound (black stuff) that is used for this problem and hey presto!... problem solved.

I now have a similar seepage at the nearside front wheel but as I'm shortly due a pair of tyres, I'll get the tyre fitting workshop to do the same when the wheels are off the car.

Hope this helps.

Hi Paul: thanks for that, mine seems to have gone beyond that, the 'black stuff' did work ok on the offside front, but the two rears must be in worse condition - overall the two rear wheels do appear worse, the lacquer/paint has also come off around the wheel bolt holes, so, looks like a wheel re-furb job!

Ha you know what I thought it was just me. One of mine had a very tiny air leak. Had a new tyre on, had a friend fit a new valve twice, then had a puncture and got it repaired. But has always had a slight leak.
When I took it in to my mates garage for an MOT they said the alloys could do with a refurb as they are corroding quite a bit and they said then that could be the reason for the loss of PSI in the tyre. I'd loss 20 Psi over "2 1/2" / "3" months.
Got some new 20inch alloys now

Hi: great to know I'm not alone! Strange that it is both rear wheels with mine, although, saying that, when I first got the XC90 9 months ago the front offside wheel was also leaking, but some of the magic black goo sorted it, it's been o.k. since. Coincidentally I took the XC90 into local wheel refurb. guy today, he's quoted £100 all in to refurb. both back wheels, guarantees they will be airtight! I'm wondering if Volvo had a duff batch of wheels supplied back in 2004, as I have only encountered this once before but that was on a 30 year old Triumph Stag!
